I'm going to do a little travel over the summer overseas and I need a folding knife with a smallish blade, 3"~4"
just to carry around
what's the best blade under $25 from amazon.com(preferably since I need it quickly) or somewhere that would take a week or less to arrive
looking for one that won't snap if I tried to cut rope:)

thanks

I don't own one but the RAT-1 gets the best reviews I've seen for a $25 folder.

P.S. WELCOME TO BLADEFORUMS. Look around. Enjoy the view :D

Welcome to BF :)

Try and expand your budget slightly $25 don't get you much.

Also look into the laws of where you will be going, staying out of jail is a good thing.

Forgot about the rat-1.... yeah get that, you'll be shaking your head in disbelief at how good the knife is and how cheap it was.

Under $25 is a little hard... I can get with a few dollars of 25 though!

The RAT they mentioned, I've heard good things about it though never tried, is around $30: http://www.amazon.com/Rat-Folder-Black-Blade-Plain/dp/B001E8EM2E/ref=pd_sbs_k_2

others:
$26: http://www.amazon.com/Kershaw-Skyline-Textured-Handle-stone-washed/dp/B001CZBDF8/ref=pd_sim_sg_1

Under 25! http://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Lightweight-Point-Blade-Handle/dp/B00190TM68/ref=pd_sim_sg_6

27.77: http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-Sw...00VY4OJS/ref=pd_sim_sg_40/192-9262792-8521622

Hold on a second before buying, though. A few things to keep you safe and satisfied.

First, check the relative knife laws of where you're traveling. Many will have different and confusing laws. For instance, not only are you not allowed to have a blade over 3 inches in Britain- it cannot lock either. So, read your laws- or better, ask us about them.

Second: in terms of cutting rope and carrying around: cutting rope, if you're doing it a LOT will dull the knife rather quickly. By a lot I mean you're working as a sailor or something- using it 10 or more times a day. So, sharpening would come into play, as even the best knife probably won't still be sharp after a summer of intense, intense usage. Then, I'd recommend serrations if you're doing so, as they can be helpful and help with keeping an edge longer- though they're hard to sharpen.

If it's for occasional use- cutting an apple, occasional rope- you use it once a week or less- then I'd be comfortable telling you a plain edge is better. Actually, if you are going to cut rope a lot but still want to cut ordinary things, I'd recommend a combo edge- half serrated, half plain.

Let us know what you choose!

Dude get a Rat 1 for 25 bucks. It is the cheapest best quality knife I have ever seen. The Spyderco Tenacious is real good too, but they run around $30.00 to $35.00

RAT 1 is a really good knife, but it might not be viewed well when traveling through various custom ports. It isn't a small knife. Plan on clipping it to your pocket, not carrying it inside it.

The CRKT Drifter might be a good knife at your price point. Incredibly sturdy, decent steel, and probably about $22 now. I use one all the time as a hard work knife. So far it has been indestructible.

And no love for a smaller sodbuster? I bought a Queen D2 yellow handled sodbuster about 3 months ago for $23 + shipping. Excellent knife as it is, but almost unbeatable at the price point. Slips in and out of the pocket easily and cuts like a demon.

I know you said that you wanted to spend $25, but I just wanted to point out that you can pick up a Spyderco Persistence for right around $30-35 shipped from Ebay.

It's a great knife for the price... :)

I'm just traveling to vietnam and other places like china
can't seem to knife carrying laws on the net if anyone can direct me to them :)

just need a good EDC that wouldn't break my heart if I lost it or something, won't be shanking bears or anything like that

I've been carrying around some cheap winchester knife for a while now and it's pretty useless

I was really surprised at this one actually:

Gerber Powerframe

I actually got it in a gift exchange at work (never would have bought it for myself, honestly) and I have to say that I was really impressed. The lock-up was tight--full engagement of the frame lock against the base of the blade with zero blade play--and it felt very sturdy. To top it off, it came with a much better factory edge than any of my other production knives. If I remember correctly, it was even purchased at *gasp* Wal-Mart

I just did a breif search of "china knife laws" you might be a bit restricted in what you can carry.

just seaching Victorinox Pioneer gave me like 20 results:D which one are you referring to?

I don't think I'd be detained for carrying a 3" knife from reading around the net but I could be wrong

Whichever one you prefer would do ;) - I believe they're all under or around 25$.

I was referring to the standard Alox Pioneer. I have one and it works great. It looks like this:

Plus, I seriously doubt it would get you in any trouble with most countries' knife laws

You'll probably want to remove that auction link because it's against forum rules. I don't want you to get infracted for it.

I have a Spyderco Persistence which is a good knife and I would recomend it. It's about $30 I think. I also like the Kershaw Ener-G which can be found on feebay for about the same.

Victorinox Swiss Army Cadet Pocket Knife (Silver Alox, Ribbed)

Gerber 22-01964 Powerframe Clip Folder Knife with Serrated Edge/ or choice of fine edge

Gerber 22-41493 EVO Jr. Serrated Edge Knife

KA-BAR Dozier Folding Spear Blade

all of those sound good for cheap knives, hmm decisions
