Best Knife Bargains

The Kershaw Diskin Hunter is probably the least amount of dollars and the most capable knife I have ever purchased. No lock to fail, sharpens very well with the Sandvik 14C28N, G10 scales, US made, and cost around $45. The best value I own.

Just an idea, you can think I'm wrong, but can you guys get over the MAP increases and just go back to posting about knives?

I do think you're wrong. Why was the comment about the griptilian pricing off topic? This thread is about knife "bargains". With the new pricing, it's about $10-$15 higher for the exact same knife. The response simply stated that they were at a bargain with the old pricing.

Are you sure you're in the right thread?

< $20 - Kershaw Chill, Kershaw Crown
$20-$30 - Buck Vantage Select, Ontario Rat 1 or 2
$30-$40 - Spyderco Tenacious
$40-$50 - Buck Vantage Pro, Kershaw Skyline
$50-$70 - Kershaw Blur, Spyderco Delica, Spyderco Endura
$70-$100 - BM Griptilian (old pricing), Spyderco Manix 2
$100-$150 - Spyderco PM2, BM Sequel (old pricing), ZT 0566, ZT 0770
$150-$200 - ZT 0801, Spyderco Techno, Lionsteel SR (aluminum handle) knives

This thread is about value knives, so the price increase from Benchmade has changed the company s standing when considering value. Granted the knives are the same quality they have been, but the value has changed. And bargains are the topic.

For a steel junkie the Endura with a solid zdp 189 blade is a great buy.

Considering you can get a super high quality SAK for less than $20 (on eBay), that not only takes a great edge, but has a lot of very useful tools, I would say you can't beat an SAK. Moreover, it comes with a lifetime warranty that Victorinox is really good at backing, even if it is due to stupidity (and every time I have messed up a SAK it was stupidity).

Another great bargain is any Opinel. I will be damned if that archaic-looking wood handled peasant knife isn't the most durable cutting tool for the money I have ever seen. For under $20 you can get an Opinel 8 that will take a wicked edge, lock up tight as a drum, and cut for the rest of your life, and perhaps a few more after that.

For classic folders, I would say that Case still offers a lot of knife for the money. You can get a nice bone handled stockman or congress knife for around $35-$40 dollars that will last a lifetime with the most basic care.

For higher-end production knives, GEC is hard to beat. You can sometimes get custom level craftsmanship for a fraction of what you would pay a custom maker, and they are definitely built to last a lifetime and then some.

Victorinox fibrox handled kitchen knives. I use them every day, and not just for opening boxes.

Interesting. I looked through Kershaws website last night, and saw that knife for the first time. Not a bad looking knife

I can't believe I am about to say this, but I think the Cold Steel Pendleton Hunter qualifies...

Last year I bought both, the mini and the regular size, to test out for hunting. Unfortunately I didn't get to use them, so my opinion is based on other criteria...
As a hunting / general purpose knife, it is the perfect size for me. It is comfortable in hand, and should work great when wet or bloody, although I can't say for sure how it would be for extended use.
The steel is decent, and the knife came out of the box very sharp. I like the sheath too. Great retention, but not difficult to get the knife out.

The Pendleton Lite series has gotten good reviews as well. Granted it isn't the same steel, and the handle is different, but these can be had for around $20 online.

I find most [non china] spyderco's to be excellent values. Where else can you get a hard use capiable, CF scale'd, M4 bladed knife for $160, they've got it all, S90/S110, Aogami super blue,M390, 204, CTS-XHP, no one else can even come close to what they offer for the money. Talking purely value per dollar Spyderco is pretty much untouchable.

I would go with my Milwaukee 48-22-1910 Side Open Utility Knife. I got it in a pack with a tape measure. It's great at breaking down boxes, and it's better at the job than my Opinels, JYDII, Cold Steel Bushman regular and Bowie, and Von Tempske Bowie. There's something about having all that handle, and being able to adjust the length of the protruding blade that is safer and more controllable than any of my folders OR fixed blades.

I don't break down boxes for a living, I use them as tinder in my wood stove. I take one flat of cardboard and roll it up into a cylinder, then take another and shred a brush/broom type set of slits down 3/4ths of the side. Then I roll up the partially shredded cardboard into the roll, put that at the bottom of the stove, and stack wood on top. It kind of looks like a roll of cardboard puking a cardboard squid out its mouth. So far, one match has been all I've needed to get the fire started. I use it almost every day for that task.

I also buy a lot of books these days and find that when I just peek the tip out and use that to open mailers that it goes much faster than it would with any pocket knife. It's great for the task at hand.

I didn't buy it to keep the wear and tear off my safe queens. It simply does the job better. That's a value.

For a folder that is very well constructed and very inexpensive, COAST FX350. keepem sharp

I have an Opinel, and a Mora, and they were both great value. I am not a hard user, so am perhaps not the best person to comment on that, but as far as value goes for someone like me, they are both hard to go past. In the hard user camp, I would maybe put my Izula II, which I think was excellent value for the money. Some recent posts notwithstanding!
Edited to add: the problem I have with the Opinel, is that after two decades of use the handle has become a little slippery. I guess they don't make 'em like they used to!

You're response keeps pointing to the MAP increases, which you guys have already complained about plenty, I'm sure everyone is now aware of how you feel about it. I'm sick of hearing about it every time you or other whiners post about BM. Just leave it, it doesn't matter, they are not changing it, so why add it to EVERY post? A knife is a knife, separate the whining from the question asked. If you don't think it's a bargain then don't add it to the list.

Mora hands down. Love mine.
SpyderCo Tenacious line- fantastic value folder
Dragonfly2 - best EDC size knife IMO
Leatherman New Wave- excellent all around pocket tool

That was the first time I ever posted about BM's pricing. Go look at my posts history.

Also, since when were consumers voicing concerns a bad thing? Isn't this part of the consumer feedback process?
