Best Knife Bargains

That was the first time I ever posted about BM's pricing. Go look at my posts history.

Also, since when were consumers voicing concerns a bad thing? Isn't this part of the consumer feedback process?

No, not when OP just asked about a knife bargain and you interject your thoughts on a knife company and your concerns. Sorry if I lumped you into the large group of posters who feel the need to consistently push the "before...then after MAP" over and over again. It's off topic, and doesn't answer the original question.

It absolutely does. When what was once a good value is no longer considered so by a good number of people then it is fair game to mention in a thread regarding "best bargains". Why does it bother you so much? Skip those posts and move on but stop whining about it.

I think the Ontario Rat folders are great value at a bargain. Everyone I've received has been centered, smooth, and has been sharp with an even grind directly from the factory.

I think Condor knives offer outstanding bang for the buck. I picked up a Condor Dundee bowie for $50 and love the Hell out of it. Also their machetes are top notch and great for the price!

In folders, the Kershaw Skyline and OD-1; CRKT Drifter; Ka-Bar Doziers; Spyderco Tenacious and Resilience. In fixed blades, the Condor lineup; CS Pendleton Hunter Lite; Moras and Hultafors; some, but not all of the Becker/Ka-Bar lineup. My personal picks in each category for value (price, quality, usefulness, etc) are the Kershaw Skyline and the Condor Bushcraft. Very very hard to beat those 2 for their price/performance, imo....

I agree with addylo -- the MAP pricing issue is exactly on point. At one time (pre-MAP), a BM 940 would have been a good choice for the "bargain" category (depending on the retailer). Once the discounting became widespread, I started accumulating BMs one after the other, since the prices looked good not only by contrast with MAP pricing but as dollar value for quality. MAP pricing takes BM to the premium pricing "not worth it" category for me. Much like Spyderco's sprint runs. But everyone has a different view of value.

In a strictly rhetorical sense, I suppose one could claim that talking about former bargains is not germaine to the specific question asked. But then again, this isn't a forum for lawyers. I for one appreciate the additional context brought to the discussion by the inclusion of historical reasons why someone's previous bargain is no longer so. Not everyone is aware of the MAP issue, and I did not detect any whining, but simply a straightforward statement. If every post was to be replied to in the strictest interpretation of being "on topic", this forum would be borrrrrinnnggggggggggggggg.

I just got into the Rat folders (Rat 1 and Rat 2). They are fantastic, especially the Rat 2.

Your logic doesn't make any sense, because a response pointing out the change in pricing DOES answer the original question.

If someone says "A Benchmade Griptilian is a great bargain...at the old pre-MAP price" then someone who's not pissing and moaning will read that objectively and think "Well, then maybe I need to try to find a Grip on the Exchange, or on an auction site*.

But then you come along and want to stifle that, and I'm not sure why.

*Where I've seen plenty of BM knives going for pre-MAP prices still
