Best knife for ~$200?

Benchmade Bob Lum 760 LFTi - a little larger (4.0" blade, 9.0" overall) than your specs but it's a titanium framelock in your price range. CPM-M4 steel.

Chinook 3?

I like the handle, but I think that because of the sweep of the blade, the tip would be inconvenient to use.

The only things keeping me from buying that is the slightly higher price and the fact that I'm not sure how well I can sharpen a tanto. Right now I'm using the DMT Magna-Guide system, and I don't know how well it does on tantos.

Photobucket seems to be having a cow.. hopefully these load..

Combative Edge m1 (large but very light and thin for it's size, carries very easy, Ti and grippy G10):

Spyderco Manix 2:

forgot about the manix. if photobucket weren't being flushed down the toilet at the moment i have a nice comparison pic of the blue manix to the sage 2. i think it's got the blade size and toughness he's looking for.

I like the looks of the M1. What are some similiar steels to N690? I can't find a store where the Manix 2 is still in stock. The Buck Mayo TNT looks interesting, but it seems really slippery.
Oh by the way, I'm open to suggestions on all brands, not just Spyderco.

You won't be able to get the blue manix 2 anywhere but ebay these days it was a 500 piece sprint run. the green carpenter's steel manix 2 is also getting very hard to find. However the standard manix 2 is in stock on knifecenter.com and newgraham.com

*strokes his blue manix 2 "yes my precious, he wants us but he cannot haves us"

The m1 cobalt vandanium is very similar to VG10 if I am not mistaken??? im sure one of the steel gods of BF can help clarify, but the knife is really awesome bang for the buck.

Are you looking for a blue manix 2? there are still a few on ebay.

I would prefer not to use ebay.

I was thinking about the CTS-XHP one, but by the time I decide I want to buy another knife it will probably be gone.

I'll put that one on my list of possibles then, but I already have a knife in VG-10.

you just missed out on a great deal in BF knife exchange then. A blue and an FG manix for 265 i think. just watch knife exchange then, you might get lucky.

spyderco barong. discontinued but still a freaking awesome knife. some dealers still have a few left.

Emerson is another maker worth looking into. The new, stonewashed versions are SWEET. They may not have the latest "whiz-bang" materials, but 154CM, G10 with THICK titanium liners and monster liner locks are nothing to sneeze at. Emersons are built like tanks, and the designs are excellent.

I don't doubt that they're solid knives, but AFAIK they all have chisel grinds, and I would prefer not to send anything out to be modified, and I don't have the equipment to change it.

I purchased my NIB BM760 from a local sporting goods store for $159.99 plus tax.

I am not familiar with the Magna-Glide system but I haven't had any problem sharpening tanto blades on my Sharpmaker.

My local REI stocks knives, but they're a bit on the expensive side. Not full MSRP, but not internet prices either. I might go take a look though.

Kershaw Volt? Benchmade MPR? Spyderco Para? Used small Sebby? Benchmade Mini Skirmish?

WOW, I'm liking the Volt. How long will they be produced? I like the MPR, but it's a bit too stubby. Not sure if I described that right, but I think it's too thick for the length. I don't like the blade:handle ratio and the tip-down only configuration bugs me on the para. I'm going to get a new large 21 sebenza with micarta inlays in the future, so I'll skip the small Sebenza. I don't like all the holes in the blade and handle on the Skirmishes.

FWIW, not all emersons are chisel ground. In fact.. most aren't these days. I like the: CQC15, CQC7A, CQC11, CQC-8, Horseman, etc..... handled all but the 7A, but since it is identical to the tanto version, I'm sure it is just as good.
