Best knife steel in use today

In general IMO....
Fixed blade cpm3v...cpm m4...l6...just to name a few..
Folders Zdp-189...cpm s90v...m390.....just to name a few..

There are many other options and variations...depending on what your cutting ect...

I agree in general there's no "best steel" for everything. This isn't a bad list of "leading steel options" though.

Of course, I'd want to throw in some of the nice carbon steels: 1095, 5160, SR101. Hard to beat for toughness.

Whatever they used for this.

I'm a steel freak and the top steels I consider:

ZDP-189
Dozier D2
SR-101
CTS-XHP
S90V
3V

It's not all about the raw steel but the way it's heat treated.

If you include the price as part of the equation, it's hard to beat 1095 at 58 HRC.
At least I like that for the money.

The best two steels I have ever used have been.

S110V in stainless at 64+ HRC

K294 (A11) at 64 HRC for non stainless

But then my needs are different than most.

For mere mortals, 52100 is hard to beat for non-stainless; and M390 is hard to heat for stainless. Both steels hold a good edge and are easy to resharpen. They do what you need them to do. And they are a joy to own.

My personal favourites based on my experience:

Bohler M390 or CPM-S90V in a folder. CPM-M4 is also superb but it must be coated (preferably with DLC) to prevent rust.

INFI in a fixed blade (purely because it displays the properties of tool steel but with better rust resistance). 52100 is also fantastic but rusts very easily.

How would the CPM4V compare to VANADIS 4E ?

I didn't found a chart of V4E but one of his precedent vanadis 4.

Everyone knows Rosta-Frei is #1! :D:D:D

If talking about a solid GENERAL steel that has the broadest range of appropriate application I'm gonna' go out on a limb and say that 420HC is a pretty good choice off the top of my head. Good corrosion resistance, decent edge retention, and depending on the heat treatment is can be used in every thing from small and medium knives (see Buck) to large high-impact choppers (see Condor). Doesn't have the highest performance in any one category, but it sure isn't a slouch and can be used in just about anything, it seems.

NEO has given us some interesting charts to look at. I guess my favorite is S90V...if I could find one without mortgaging my home. I like M390, CPM M4, CTS 20CP for my folders. D2 would be fine also. Rust be damned!
