Best knife under $600

You'll have to excuse me, but I don't understand the price you've picked.

$300 seems like the price for a really good production knife like a Chris Reeve.
$500 is, generally, what a custom costs.
$600 is what a custom costs with an upgrade (like damascus).

I'd say buy a custom knife with a Damascus blade.

Here's my suggestion:
Macassar Stinger

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Gunhammers or Todd Begg's Glimpse come in under 600?

If it's a user I would go check out Ryan Bailey, Darrel's Stepson. How about Kirby Lambert?

Actually, check out this thread and you can look at all the nice options presented there :D

Three Worlds, I agree with you, which is why I didn't suggest a little something from DDR!! I LOVE his work.

Trouble is, there's not a whole lot of customs that are three inches or less. The Glimpse is closer to four, most of Kirby's stuff is 3.5 inches and larger, the Gunhammer is also 3.5ish and Ryan's models are also larger. That said, any of these great makers could make a three inch knife- but probably not by April.

For 3inch or less custom/handmades that are normally available in that price range, I can only think of a few. Obenauf makes the small (3 inches) and mini model 2 (2.75 inches), Terzuola has the 3B- right at 3 inches. Darrel Ralph has a 3 inch Mad Maxx. Patrick Nihiser also has a small model as does Brad Duncan with his mini whiplash. JW Smith's 3inch framelock also routinely pop-up for sale (no longer made). The Anso that TheKnifeCollector mentioned also looks to be a great fit.

EDIT: Obenauf's small model 4 is also 3 inches.

What about a Slip joint? Something by Bill Ruple? you couldnt get it in damascus but certainly a standard model with maybe perl handle right around there. Correct me if I am wrong.

Or how about T.A davidson? He does some very nice work and great file work, you could probably get alot of options for at or under 600.

By the way do you have an idea of what he likes or carries?

Checkout the William Henry Knives website, if you haven't yet. Really nice stuff and really nice folks too. Someone already mentioned a Chris Reeve Mnandi. You can't go wrong there either. I've got a number of each and not one disappointment.

I'd say get a large classic Micata inlay with serrations! Check out Neil at True North Knives.

Someone already beat me to it, but a goood carry/ Sunday knife would be a William Henry knife, or you could check out AG Russell for some David Yellowhorse knives which have an Indian inlay of semi precious stones and Indian themes. I also wish you all the best in your marriage, and your partner will be a very lucky guy to have someone who appreciates knives. Are you a collector too?

I just say 2 glimpse folders at 600 yesterday. With timascus they would be a bit more. You can get a basic gunhammer for 600 as well.

phinneygirl - Oops my bad. I thought it was the other way around for some reason. So you are looking for a nice folder under 600 for your man. Well, as door guard said at the gates to Oz, "That's a horse of a different color." No wonder everyone else was recommending manly knives. :)

In that case you have received alot of good suggestions. Here's what I would recommend then - A small Sebenza in Bg-42. They might be tough to find, and you might have to pay a premium for one, but I still think they are the best Sebenza's out there because the steel (BG-42) is as good as S30V or better because the RC is run higher on the BG-42 blades than they are on the newer S30V blades. That and Chris Reeve didn't make them in BG-42 for that long before he switched to S30V so they are rarer and thus special. :)

Sebbie is nice but the gun hammer rocks. My wife has gotten me all my best knives (sebbie, XM-18) and if I have my druthers the next one will be a gun hammer.

I'm going to say Sebenza also. I've had tons of knives in the $400-600 range and quite a few above that and it's a Sebenza that is in my pocket every day these days. They are just simply that good. They also come in a variety of decorated styles and are easy to get ahold of.

Now, if you really want to go with something custom I would suggest looking at Kirby Lambert. His stuff is excellent and well worth the money. His smallest knife still isn't as easy to carry as my small Sebenza though, which is part of the reason why the sebenza has won over my pocket.
