Best knife under $600

I just picked up a 3" folder from Bob Dozier in ivory. It is stunning and functionally perfect with a silky-smooth action. While the ivory is $100 above your budget, a gorgeous cocobolo wood folder is not:

Bob does not normally make these since they are so labor intensive, and he is currently not even taking orders, but he may have some left over from his recent NYC knife show. Give Alicia a call if you'd like to see other examples.

Good luck with your search!

Check out a Mike Obenauf Custom Folder. They come in many lengths and you can get either all Ti handles and some other choices as well. They are super sweet knives that will feel like they cost more than they do. $350 on up and worth every penny. Les Robertson is a great guy to contact for these as well as EDC, The Knife Cellar and NC Blades. Checkem out!!

I'll second the Obie. Neil at True North Knives has number of his folders and they are sweet IMHO. Also they are available now and priced at I think $475. Great knife from a great maker. If they are left handed I think I would get one!  ;)

That folding hunter by Dozier is a really nice looking knife and from the pics I've seen other places, it looks like it is a super heavy duty knife that could be passed down for several generations! If I wasn't already tied up on some other folders....................

I just say 2 glimpse folders at 600 yesterday. With timascus they would be a bit more. You can get a basic gunhammer for 600 as well.

I got a quote from the Beggs recently and the Glimpses range from 595 up, and phinneygirl did mention that she would really like to have some sort of inlay, so it really depends if she wants something other than Micarta.

I personally don't care for the ergonomics of the Sebenzas; the William Henrys can be very elegant (and do hold a great edge) but they are also quite small. Since they are both high end production folders, I highly recommend you handle both if you can at all; this should be a lot easier than trying to look at the custom folders in person. The suggestions here you're getting are ranging from very nice gents folders (WH) to some dress tacticals / work folders (DDR Gunhammer, RJ Martin), so it depends on what you want (or what you think your fiance would want).

I also forgot to mention that if you want a really nice folder from a maker that flies under the radar, you should see if you can get an Aaron Frederick. He's JW Smith's son-in-law (JW Smith is very well respected) and learned from him well, but he's not very well known and so you can get his work at a great price. There is a very nice folder at Bob Neal's that comes in at 595 with Pearl and Damascus that is exactly 3"; it feels great in hand and is much, much nicer than it looks in the photo.

But, of course you can't really go wrong with an Obie :).

Good luck with your search!

OOOOOH, I LOVE Allen Elishewitz's knives! I only have one of his knives. That is an EXCELLENT suggestion!!

I wanted to thank everyone for your help. I ended up buying him a Chris Reeve Mnandi with Mammoth Ivory Bark inlay. I really hope he likes it. I think it's pretty beautiful. Got it from True North Knives.
