There are plenty of smaller gentleman's knives but what are some of the very best large gentleman's knives? Maybe some of the william henry B30 line? The zero tolerance 0600 also has a nice look to it. What do you guys think? What is your favorite?

EDIT: Reduced the price limit to $600

In that price range I would recommend exploring the wonderful world of custom folders.

Didn't notice the budget change at first.

I'm not a big CRK fan, but within that range I would look for a Large Sebenza with inlays or one of the less expensive unique graphic models. It's not exactly a gentleman's knife, but very handsome, well made and the touches I mention can make it much more of a conversation piece than a threat.

Your head will spin with all the possible choices. How about a Fallkniven PXL. Great steel, solid folder. Happy hunting and good luck

The fact that there are so many options is part of the problem for me. I have no idea which makers are considered a great deal. I'm particularly worried about getting a knife that looks beautiful but has lackluster performance.

Find one that "pops" your eyes out its so visually appealing, then check specs, then search out some reviews on said knife. Be prepared to be overwhelmed. It's all good. The hunt for your blade should be enjoyable. Good luck with your search

When I think of "gentlemen's knives" . . . and I think about them a lot . . . I consider the kind of knives I can carry around the office and use without alarming the sheeple. Deploying a knife with a 3.5" + blade runs the risk of having to explain myself to someone in HR. I, for one, don't own a knife that's more important to me than keeping my job. So I tend to carry knives with blades that are 3.25" or less. Among those are Small Sebenzas, some William Henry knives, a couple of Benchmades, a Spyderco or two, and several customs. And I don't carry any of them clipped to my pocket, of course. No use inviting someone to ask, "say, what have you got there?" I also like to carry knives that look like something you might pull out of kitchen drawer. So I prefer knives with black handles. If I were willing to go to a 3.5" knife, for example, I'd carry a Knifeart.com Large Carbon Fiber Sebenza. It might be mistaken for a steak knife in a pinch. ;) And oh . . . what a knife! :D

I actually have been really eyeing a few of the william henry knives. They truly are beautiful items. It does concern me though, that whenever I see a posting trying to sell one, it is for substantially less than the original price. I wonder why they don't seem to hold their value? In your experience with them, do they perform well in addition to being beautiful?

Phenomenally well for their intended purpose. Just keep your William Henry touched up and it will hold an edge forever. And their fit and finish are exemplary . . . among the very best on the planet.

how is the deployment? Smooth like a benchmade 940?

Yes. Like buttah! :D If you don't want to spend the big bucks, try an E6 or an E10 depending on which size you like. They're terrific knives.

Superb, of course. But definitely not a production knife. Then again, the OP didn't specify production knives, now did he? ;)

PS: Good luck with your sale, Sonnydaze. :)

There are some good customs in that price range. Not the best, but good.

Shirogorovs seem to be dropping in price so you may be able to score one for that or a little higher.

What?

There are some damn-fine slipjoints that can be had in that price range. I don't know what you define as "not the best"...

Edited to add:

I see you reduced your budget...

I don't know what you were originally willing to spend, but a Rockstead Hizen can be had for around $700. I recently bought a Higo-X and it's the best knife I've encountered:thumbup:

Thanks for well-wishes. Mine sold rather quickly, but it is a great knife.
There are many great folders, including many customs, to pick from...given his price cap. I wish him luck.

William henry are my favorite production knives. just understand they are like a new car, sell them and you lose. there are so many they just don't have much resale value. I don't think they make one that big either. how about a bench made gold class? I think those are very nice. I will give you a word of advice though. if you deploy a 3.5"+ blade in public you might be explaining it to someone. unless you live in the alaska bush. I do live in a comparable rural area but in the lower 48. so I don't have the problem. any urban area I would not do that. in fact most places like la,chi,ny that is not even legal and could get you in serious trouble. I did not mean to be a jerk I am just pointing out in case he does not know this.

I would kill for a burger Dakar, definitely my grail knife, but it's hard to justify the expense at this point. I wonder if a large sebenza 21 with snake wood would work suitably as a gentleman's folder.
