A lot of folks post complaining about the lousy knife outlets locally available to 'em. Believe 'em - just not very productive. Here's my question - who's good? Who do you check out on a regular basis? Don't know if you go there because of selection, price or knowledgeable sales staff - but at what stores are you a usual suspect ( aplogies to another forum)? I would be particualarly interested in Chicago area recomendations.
Here's my list for Milwaukee ,Wi area.
Sportsmans Warehouse, New Berlin
Gander Mountain , Waukesha
Cassanovas - Brookfield
Tom's Cutlery ,Rockord,Ill. - not exactltly Milw area - but the only all knife and sword store I've ever been in - worth the drive from Milwaukee.
So -don't whine about the bad ones - tell me where the good ones are?

Hardware, Feed & Seed, Tractor Supply, Electrical Supply , Plumbing Supply and even Bait Shops.

I and mine might pay a tad more for knife and knife related items, like a Norton stone, Case , and Old Hickory , in return we get great customer service.

I and mine want mom and pops to stay in business, so we support our own.
We have an aging society, and it will continue to be. So many folks cannot physically handle the bigger box stores.

Mom & Pops are easier to park in front, navigate inside, and the mom and pops assist with shopping and even taking out to the vehicle, and even delivering to the home.

Not uncommon for a Case knife, and Norton stone to be dropped off to someone, as the delivery truck was out that way.

It could be the knife and stone were out of stock, and the order came in.
Or someone called in wanting one, with other needs and instead of coming in, the truck was coming out with feed and seed and brought it out.

they have always treated me well. special orders, gold benchmades etc. i try to buy something from them every once in a while even though i could get it cheaper. minus the shipping, factor in getting to handle several first to get the best one, the joy of having it righjt now and the desire to see them stay in business.

That one younger guy in there that dresses in black and carries 20 knives is pretty cool.
He invited me to join a knife group but i haven't been able to make one of their meetings yet.
He has some really neat stuff on him.

Wild Sports, Orangevale, CA. Good selection of factory knives, and lots of guys there who love guns and knives and are happy to talk. I go every few weeks to window shop the knives and guns and I do like to buy from them; we need more stores like that.

Gotta be some more places worth a visit than this? Again -especially interested in Chicago area Brick and Mortars?

Two I know of,

Edgeworks in Frederick, MD

Country Knives in Lancaster, PA.

In Edgeworks once, owner knows his stuff, prices MSRP for the most part. In CK several times, prices above MSRP, owner and staff know their stuff, lots of discontinued items. Discontinued items tend to be cheaper than what you see them for on the net sometimes.

Support the MD and PA economies ;)...

Warren Cutlery - Rhinebeck NY

Great service, they have a knife room with a nice selection of Kitchen and Sporting knives.

They also have a huge selection of cooking tools including high-end coffee machines and pots ( that's how I get my wife to go).

Tom's Cutlery ,Rockord,Ill. - not exactltly Milw area - but the only all knife and sword store I've ever been in - worth the drive from Milwaukee. But you already said it. :)
I'm there about every other week. There's going to be a knife/gun show the last Sunday of the month at the Forrest Hills Country Club that Tom told me about. In case anyone is in the area. http://www.tomscutleryco.com/

Seems like Gary Moore (Moore Cutlery) is in Lockport IL but I'm not sure if he has a storefront or not. http://www.knives.cx/store/index.php
