Best Made / Base Camp X Axes

The workshop weighs the HB in at 2 lbs 14 oz. That should be taken as the most accurate weight. Not the 3.4 stated above.

The Black Donald (Best Made Axe) is on its way to me as we speak, and trust me, its gonna get a workout and full report on here for everyone to read. I am excited.

I was curious and looked it up.

LOL, was wondering the same thing. I personally don't mind it if it fits the op and the kit. A Dylan Fletcher Bush Operator in black micarta with red spacers would sure look good paired with that bad boy. They have some classy accessories...

My point of getting the Black Donald is this :

Lets see how it stands up. Lot of guys dont like the paint, the fact it is a Council but a Best Made, etc. But, that being said, lets give the axe a fair shake and see what happens.

I find it interesting that lots of guys dont like the paint, but many loggers over many years used to paint their axes so they could find them easier in the woods, or identify theirs from someone elses, etc. Heck I have the Kelly Registered axe I have posted pics on here of, and it has an orange handle, no one ever said a word about that.

All I know is that its an axe, so that means I like it. I might like it less or more than others when it is all said and done. But we are going to find out.

I'm wondering if the paint makes the handle more slippery when hands are sweaty.

A painted handle that's not so good-looking, from a Chinese manufacturer:

It depends on the type of paint. I have an axe with an old garant handle that has yellow paint on the swell end, it works fine. other types blister my hands though.

Nothing against BMC, just never liked paint on them. I missed your orange one, unless it was a rare one I would sand the paint of that too.

I have no doubts on the construction of the velvicut line from Council. I believe this is the same axes BMC is using, save for some additional finish work and painting of course.

Just curious if this is a provided axe for review (by BMC), or purchased personally and reviewed?

If you are suggesting I am on the payroll of BMC, then no, you are mistaken. If I remember correctly, I have also stated my skeptical nature on the Gransfors, yet have recently acquired 2 of them, to test and see what they are all about, and am also not on the Gransfors payroll. I purchased the Black Donald straight up for the following reasons, as stated before :

1. If it is an axe, I like it, one way or another, maybe more than some, maybe less.
2. It should get a fair shot at a review. Am I a review expert? Nope. Just a guy that loves axes, and has 1 or 2.
3. I would like to add it to my collection of a couple axes.

And thats it. Then also posted is the pic of the Kelly with the painted handle, I apologize, I guess my other pics did not fully show the handle. And no, there will be no sanding. Enjoy.

I wouldn't sand it either. Wouldn't even chop with it. To nice of a collectors piece. Still though if it was something still available on the market today I would remove that paint. That is just personal preference however.

Wasn't suggesting you were on the pay roll, just asked how the review came to be. No need to jump the gun OP. I am excited to see your review. Said that before. Your the true collector and resident historian as it were here. I respect your opinion.

Wish I had a quarter of your collection.

I'll second that Skogkniv, btw thanks for all the Ray Mears youtube uploads. I have a buddy that's just learning the ropes and he's subscribed to your channel. He loves the stuff-we're going up to an 8000 foot trout lake this weekend to slay some rainbows and do some axe crafting.

No problem. Be sure to check out RichiePowell I think he is. He has All of Ray on his channel.

Be sure to snap some pics of the outing! Nothing like Axe craft in action.

Camera's good to go, flies are tied, line is conditioned, tools are sharpened, bottles filled, bags packed. I still need to do some food shopping... hmm. Man I can't wait to swing an axe again, and it's only been 4 days! I may have to get one of these eventually, that felling axe looks dynamite.

Payette, this is my jealous face: :o Care to share what lake you'll be going into???? I'm in the Boise area too.
