Best Movie Musical Score

One of my all time favorites has always been John Barry's Academy Award-winning score from Dances with Wolves. Beautiful music.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Apocalypse Now
Platoon
LOTR
Good Morning Viet Nam
Full Metal Jacket

In addition to all of the great ones listed here, I think "Chariots of Fire" had a fantastic soundtrack.
Hey good point, that is a movie that had a fantastic soundtrack and was a good movie if I remember correctly. Oddly it should be timeless in its story, wonder why no one watches it anymore?

some things I didn't see in the thread:

Burt Bacharach's score for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is fantastic, especially South American Getaway. Mark Knopfler's score for Local Hero is great. And Quadrophenia, which was written from the record, is pretty damn good.

For movies with a musician theme, and leaving aside documentaries about bands, I'd have to suggest Spinal Tap, The Great Rock and Roll Swindle, The Commitments, Yellow Submarine, and maybe also Help!

For outright musicals, where people just start singing instead of talking, I'd look at Three Penny Opera, Disney's The Jungle Book, Guys and Dolls, Paint Your Wagon, Fiddler on the Roof, and Singin' in the Rain.

For singles out of movies, the definitive answer is rock Around the Clock from Blackboard Jungle. But check out Elvis Costello and Brian Eno, "My Dark Life" from the X-Files Movie. Phenomenal. Also, Cat Stevens' songs for Harold and Maude are excellent. Elvis Costello did a song for the Rugrats movie, with Gwen Stefani singing, called "I throw My Toys Around." It is nearly perfect. And Randy Newman's I Will Go Sailing No More, from James and the Giant Peach, is great. And the Portuguese versions of David Bowie's glam years in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou are priceless.

What a great topic. I will be up all night now.

Posted by Chris Mapp:" And even though I'm sure to catch some flack for it, I like the theme score from Brokeback Mountain. It's called "The Wings" I believe."

Now why would you think anyone would give you flack for that;)

I think it was Michael Kamen who did the score for "Band of Brothers"

also John Williams for "Saving Private Ryan"

two of my favorites.

Good one but let us not forget: "The Magnificent Seven"

Definately. When I bought a Bose Acoustic wave in 1994 itcame with A demo disc that had the Magnificent seven theme on it.:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I would also like to throw the movie Patton in this mix.

When I went to basic at Ft. Dix in 1984 they were blaring Patton music when we marched into Paragon Trail ( A live fire obstacle course. The fire was at leat ten feet over our heads but everyon remembers it closer. LOL)

Also anything by Tangerine Dream or Graeme Ravel ( The Crow etc. Dont know how to spell the name.)

This may sound funny but I like Pee Wee Herman's Big Adventure for a movie score. That score has been sampled and used in a variety of formats since. As I recall the guy who did that score had no musical training. It reminds me alot of the orchestra type scores used in old school warner bros. Bugs Bunny and Looney Tunes cartoons.

Now that's a really tough one. Right now I would say it's between Blade Runner and King Arthur.

OK, OK, Blade Runner. No, King Arthur. Wait...

It's kind of hard to talk about scores because so many movies today contain a lot of pop songs. That was not the case back in the day. One of the best pure scores written for a movie may have been Duke Ellington's score for Otto Preminger's "Anatomy Of A Murder" As far as material taken from other sources, "Clockwork Orange' is right up there. (did I mention that one before? lol)

I GOT IT I GOT IT! It has to be CROSSROADS with Ralph Machio where Stevie Vai plays guitar throughout. Or BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB also by Ry Cooder.

EDIT: I believe Ry Cooder produced the soundtrack as a compilation not necessarily played the tracks himself.

Howz about the soundtracks from Ferris Bueller's Day Off or the first Austin Powers movie...
