Best New ZT

ZT 0909 looks like a good knife, but 7.5 ounces and a liner lock? Really?

The knives that made ZT famous, were the ZT 0200, ZT 03XX which are no longer in production.

We shall disagree on a lot. Not all military knives need G-10 because most use gloves. Not all military folders need 3.75"-4" blades.

Just on one comparison:

ZT 0909 is pretty much a replacement for ZT 0200 and both are liner locks and weigh about the same at 7.5-7.9 ounces! If anything the textured G-10 on the 0909 gives more traction than the smoother one on 0200. 0909 has better steel and flipper action.

I wasted two hours sketching out a fixed blade design, scrapped it, went to browse general, opened this thread, and realized I had spent two hours basically trying to sketch a fixed version of the 0456.

I think I need to just go ahead and buy this.

Yes! :)

The ZT 0200 is also what, 8 years old? I expect improvements. Also, gloves don't help with grip... I have seen a lot of guys with that attitude (including me) have had accidents due to lack of traction. Which is probably why I don't trust knives with little traction, personal problem I guess haha XD I am a guy who finds gear that I like and has proven itself, integrate it into a system and I get sad when that gear gets discontinued haha, so... I must admit I am a little salty that my favourite knives got discontinued so I am a little biased :P

I really appreciate this answer. I like the look of the 0220, 0450CF, 0456 and 0804CF the most. I have a feeling I will purchase at least one of them. I am not sure if there's any place local I can get my hands on them. I was leaning towards the 0450CF but that 0456 looks cool as hell.

My current plan is to hope that Kevin has an 0456 in stock when I'm in L'ville next month. I'll probably leave with it, even if it is small, because I'll likely only have a Military with me. (If that falls through; there's no telling what I'll buy)

It has been 10 years since the initial batch of ZTs came out in 2006: 0100, 0200 and 0300.

Interesting how you always nit-pick on one part of a line, out of many sentences. Especially, how you always reply to the least important part of my response. Maybe you don't enjoy reading I suppose.

I apologize if I came across as nit-picking but all I did was to take the portions of your posts with questions and tried to answer them as best as I could. :)

It was a question and he answered it.

Does ZT plan on making the changeover to the gaudy biohazard pivot on all of their models?

... You know they don't, so why ask other than to gripe about one aspect of one knife you're not required to like or buy? All of the Sink collabs have unusual or unique pivot hardware.

Auston, can you please elaborate on why you selected that one?

In terms of all around performance, features and value, I feel the 0095 comes ahead. Prefer the stonewashed DLC to matte, I really like the size and slenderness of the 0095 for carry and use, pocket clip works perfectly (even if it's not as exciting as the 804 milled clip), price is reasonable (although up from the 0801). Action is probably the best on the 95 and the ergos are excellent for my XL hands. The majority of my feelings are going to be subjective and based on my experiences with all other knives I've owned. Although i greatly prefer the 204p steel to S35vn for better edge retention, I like all of the other features better on the 0095.

Hope that helps, although they are all great choices honestly. ZT sets the bar for value, even compared to equal quality knives from overseas.

thank you austonh. I have been looking for a ZT that slices on par with Spyderco and I hope 0095bw is the one. I have 0562 and 0452cf and several even thicker ZTs, and I don't feel any of them slices as good as spyderco pm2 or military.

No ZT yet made is capable of slicing like a Millie or PM2 because the blades are thicker and are not fully flat-ground like the Spydercos are. A FFG will slice circles around any blade of identical thickness and steel that has any variety of flats.

It sounds like you really need a Domino, Mantra, or just stick to what you have for slicing. I appreciate the robust nature of ZT blades and have to accept that there are compromises involved. The flattest-ground I'm aware of is the 0456 which has a VERY beefy blade stock that still prevents it from being the sliciest slicer in slicetown like the Millie is.

Oh and the 0456 is fantastic and I love mine and I just got it and you guys it's the best.
