Best non-chain Hamburger Place

I dunno if it qualifies for this thread, but once when I visited Embry Riddle's Daytona campus for a week one of the cooks fixed me up the best hamburger I've ever eaten. I don't even remember what was on it anymore, just that it was the most delicious (and a wee bit messy) burger I've had the pleasure of.

I realize that this is a thread about burger joints. But if you find yourself in Culver City (West Los Angeles, near Santa Monica) and have a hankering for really good pastrami, go to Johnny's Pastrami.

It's been there since the 1950's, and still has that diner feel - table top jukeboxes, chrome & naugahyde

And don't get me started on the Kosher pickles

But they do have burgers... I just never tried one....

I second this!

Decent milk shakes too, though, being a former Baskin Robbins and Carvel employee in my high school years, no one can make 'em like I can!

I wouldn't know - unfortunately, I'm lactose intolerant. Have you been to that FatBurger on Sunrise? I've been meaning to check it out. To our Cali brethren - how is FatBurger? Just another fast food chain?

The best places in NJ are:

1. The Hot Grill

2. Rutt's Hutt

3. The Pompton Queen Diner

I may not be an expert in this arena, but Rutt's Hut makes ASTOUNDING burgers. I had the great good fortune to stop there years ago ... purely at random.

You know, I can still remember the flavor and texture.

Riverside Lunch. Charlottesville, Virginia. Small balls of ground round mashed flat. Be prepared for stares if you're not a regular.

Big Jim's BBQ. Charlottesville, VA. Forget the BBQ. Go for the burgers and string fries and cold beer.

White Spot. Charlottesville, Virginia. Home of the Gus Burger with the egg on top. See Starvin' Marvin' above. We used to get that one with an egg on top too.

 Here I thought Guyon was my buddy!!

These are all in my neck of the woods, I've never tried any of them, and he never mentioned it.

Hmm. Probably, I should have asked.

Well, now they're all on 'the list.' :)

In downtown Denver yesterday I had a fantastic buffalo burger at Dixon's Downtown Grill. Located at 16th and Wazee. Nothing fancy, but perfectly thick, juicy, and grilled. Comfortable outdoor seating and the weather was perfect.

I haven't been to Fatburger in 25 years but I hear it is still very good. In SoCal I choose Farmer Boys. Great Burgers and the best fried zuchini in the U.S.

Does anybody have any recommendations for outstanding burgers in Austin, Fredericksburg, or San Antonio, Texas?

I'm gonna be there on Nov. 1st for 10 days - Girl's Road Trip with my mom. We love burgers!

Also, if anyone knows where to get the best onion rings in any of those 3 towns, that would be great. My mom LOVES onion rings.

Austin. There is only 1 place to go. "Dirty's"
A really great place. They make everything there too.

Here are some jpg's of their menu.

I forget the vendors name, but they set up at the Fair Hill powwow in North East MD. The powwow isn't held there anymore, and I haven't seen the vendor anywhere else, but their buffalo burgers were really good.

I actually have 3 different places here in Southern California:

2. The Shack in Playa del Rey

I use to live in Playa Del Rey, and grew up in the South Bay, even went to school at LMU which is near The Shack.

I've been to The Shack on many occasion either between classes. or just anytime, to go get full and get hammered. :D

They have great burgers and fries, with pitchers of beer of course. :D

And if you are in the area, and you enjoy Mexican food, there is a place called "El Tarasco" that makes awesome food for great prices. There used to be one on Rosecrans just east of Highland on the south side.

Judy, El Tarasco is excellent. IMO, the best El Tarasco is in El Segundo on Main Street. I've been to most of them, and they're all very good, but that one seems even better.

Don't forget Mama D's Italian in Manhattan Beach near the pier. It's a hole-in-the-wall but pretty good stuff.

BACK TO BURGERS....

Hey TJ, in addtion to Dirty Martin's there is a famous place here called Hut's. There's a really great "hole in the wall" (literally) place downtown called "Mike's Pub". Great stuff!

Although buffalo has a gamey smell when thawing or laying out, the cooked meat is very similar to beef in taste. The same flavor, but more distinct.

Buffalo also contains much less fat than beef, so you don't have to drain the frying pan if browning. You may even have to add a touch of oil, depending on the cut. And if overcooked, it can become tough and dry.

The Bobcat Bite in Santa Fe NM- Huge and delicious...... I mean HUGE

although right now I wish I could go to The Horsemans Haven for some chimichangas and a Burrito or may be huevos

I have to give a mention to my friend Mike at Mike's Old-Fashioned Hamburgers in Mt. Pleasant, Texas. Big, thick, and juicy; a lot of good burger for the buck.

It's true, every time I leave New Mexico, I quickly become homesick for food. :)

Might be the best darned burger in the entire Midwest, but it's still nothing compared to a mediocre New Mexican smothered burrito. :D

I like the way Wendy's in New Mexico lets you add GREEN CHILE to your burger!!!

You're right, "Let's go to Hut's for a big mustard burger."

I'm starving right now, so this thread is not helping me. :D

I know this is supposed to be about non-cahin places, but since smebody already mentioned Fatburger, i must say that you Californians got at least one thing right and that is chain restaurant burgers. Fatburger and In 'N Out definately live up to the hype. The first time I went to In N' Out in Oakland, I got a burger and fries. The second time I went in Vegas , I bagged the fries and got two burgers:D Both locations had lines around the corner for lunch and the big one in Vages had two buildings because the restuarant wasn't big enough to store their supplies because they had it all dedicated to extra seating space. lol We have a Fatburger here in Clearwater and it is pretty darn good.
