Best office knife?

If you shop around on ebay, you can find a Spyderco Kiwi within your budget. I think it's one of the very best, most friendly (almost cute in fact), choices for an office knife. I do love mine!
Next to that one, the Fallkniven U2 is remarkable and humble-looking as well.
Both are my two most carried knives, indeed in an office environment.

That would make an excellent office knife! I have a number of smaller case slipjoints that I take to work. I doubt their tiny muscrat would scare anyone and the little wharncliffe blade is great for opening packages.

I also carry a Kiwi and love that with the 'spiderco 'snap' it can be opened one handed. I find most small knives require me to use two hands to open.

I agree with those recommending the Kershaw Leek. It has a slim profile and doesn't weigh down dress slacks. It also comes in a variety of styles so you can get one that suits your tastes. Overall a very handy knife.

To me..

Office = SAK = sheeple-friendly

Pick any small, light model. Heck, you can get one with sterling silver scales and tell the knife-challenged it's jewelry!

Hmm.. interesting stuff so far, guys. Thank you all.

What about those knives that are specifically tailored to your fingers, or something like that? The ones where you measure around 2 fingers and send them your measurements... does anyone know what I'm talking about?

WTF? Are you talking about the Hideaway Knife? Sorry for the imprupt but that kind of knife doesn't seem sheeple friendly at all. It is SD oriented and i don't think it would serve you well as an utility knife for the usual chores.

Stick to a SAK or anything with bright colorfull handles (Benchmade Mini Grip, Pink Delica, Pink Dragonfly, etc). Even better, get a SAK with yellow handles!

I used to work in the woods and get promoted to the office and was used to carrying large knives. I had to down size to not scared the sheeple. I settled on a Spyderco Ladybug on my keychain that I used to open packages. And an Alox Victorinox Bantam in my back pocket.

The Bantam is so thin that I can sit on it and not know it is there. It is thinner than a pocket comb. I use the combo tool screwdriver to open my tin of Engish tea and the can opener to open my can of tuna. I use the blade of the Bantam to cut up my apple that I carry for lunch everyday.

No one is scared and I always have the bottle opener to open a bottle of beer after work.

I would go with a whittler or small stockman or peanut and you can get a very nice one in your price range. A small lockback might be a consideration too.

Advantages - as sheeple friendly as it gets. Lots of blade edge in a small package. Huge variety of handle materials. cuts and slices most things in an office environment more efficiently than thicker knives. Can be found in carbon steel.

Disadvantages - not a one hander (see sheeple friendly above.), not as many choices in blade material can not take as much abuse. The stockman, whittler and peanut have no lock, if you are not used to them, they will bite if you put enough pressure on the spine of the blade.

Just a thought.

+1

I find at work, a medium stockman or whittler with a nice bone or wood scales, very sheeple friendly.
Blades for food cutting and paper cutting.
Carbon or D2 are good steels.

For cubicle work, I think you want a Cold Steel heavy machete, the kind that can split open a car top. Just kidding :D I would go with a SAK, they're friendly and understandable and if it gets confiscated, you're not out much.

Bunch of great knives to choose from. Caly 3 Jr. might be nice, can be had in zdp-189; they are discontinued but show up in the "for sale" section. I'd take a look at Kershaw's upcoming damascus Scallion (1620DAM), fairly small 2 1/4" blade, the damascus will give it a high "cool" factor and should be under $100.

Slim and light?

Here's a few ideas:

Spyderco UKPK -- 2.4 oz. (about $100)

Spyderco Calypso III -- 3 oz. (about $100)

Kershaw G-10/S30V Leek -- 2.3 oz. (about $80)

Kershaw Skyline -- 2.3 oz. (about $30)

I don't have the weight, but I recently bought a Victorinix Alox Bantam -- I think it weighs less than any of the above knives.

Thanks guys, lots of advice here - great!

Now to research some more and choose.

Is there something like the Spyderco Caly 3, but a bit smaller (with a 2" blade)?

I agree with the above post for the AG Russell. I own one and they are fantastic little knives. At $25.00 with titanium handle scales and VG 10 steel you cant go wrong. In fact if anyone out there knows of any comparable knives in a similar price range please post. I think it has to be one of the best deals out there.

i would have to agree that the Hidaway knife you were thinking of seems a bad idea unless you are not planning to use it or take it out. It is about as office friendly as a full sized automatic, especially if stored in its neck chain sheath. Pulling one of those out from behind your shirt is going to raise some eyebrows especially considering the aggressive shapes they come in.

You have a lot of choices:

Spyderco:
UKPK
Caly 3
Dragonfly
Poliwog
Native
Sage
Spin
Delica

Benchmade:
Mini Griptilian (plenty of variations to choose from)

Slip Joints:
Anything Case
Anything Queen

Multitools (my personal opinion is that these tend to be the least threatening because they seem to be geared towards "being handy")
Anything Victorinox
Anything Wegner
Anything Leatherman (Wave, Charge, Juice series)

Kershaw, while many look elegant and non-threatening, the AO might scare some people:
Leek (many variations to choose from)
Chive
JYD
Plenty more that I can't think of at the moment

If you're looking for a 2" blade or so that's kind of similar (similarly shaped handle and flat ground blade) to the Caly3, check out the Blade Tech Mouse. You can get the base model for around 40 bucks, but they also have model with G10 scales and a S30V blade or carbon scales with the same S30V blade. I have a carbon one and it is my absolute favourite little knife. Great quality, fit and finish and it's small and thin so you barely notice when you carry it. I recommend it
