Best Old School Pocket Knife? Who would it be?

Greetings all,
Good thread DJ. How many times do we pull out a tactical in public to cut a thread, clip a fingernail, whatever. Have a Camillus bone handle barlow from the 40's that get's the call everytime. Like your dad's old case, how many stories could that knife tell. some type of small 2-blade is in my left pocket always. Best regards to all.
Mike

I've almost always had a SAK, presently an Explorer Plus. Recently I've acquired a Case Mini Trapper w/Caplifter. I always believe a pocket knife should have a screwdriver and I bought that strictly out of supporting that notion. With that said, I'm enamored as how versatile that little California Clip is, and while I think Case could've done a better job on the caplifter/screwdriver, that is doable. So anyway I find myself carrying the little Case more and more, even though I sometimes miss the tools on my SAK.
I just find for the day to day tasks, a modern folder is often over kill and a bit clumsy on small jobs. I do also have a Buck 110 and a Buck Slimline(my one modern folder) for outdoorsy stuff, but you can bet it'll be the SAK or the Case that gets the call for cleaning fish and such.

Lazarus thread but what the heck.

Hello Everyone,

I imagine that most of us started out with some type of old school pocket knife as our first. Would that have been an Uncle Henry, Old Timer, Buck, or Case. I imagine that they were all U.S.A. made at that time. I had a pocket knife as my first knife and I would say that this old pocket knife holds a special place in my heart as much as my latest Benchmade or whatever brand of tactical knives many of use carry today. I am not suggesting that the tactical versions don't offer a more unique feel but do they offer the daily carrier a more useful knife. We as knife carriers don't use our knives in a tactical role but we carry them to open a package or just cut something if needed throughout our day.

I would like to know what brand of pocket knife would you carry or do you carry today? What model and if you've got a photo post it.

My favorite knife would be the Old Case my Dad gave me. He carried it everyday and that is more important to me that any expensive tactical knife I own.

Thanks for the sharing of your experiences!

My earliest memories of traditional pocket knives were from my father and our neighbors. Boker, Old Timer from my father and Victorinox/Wenger from my neighbors. To this day I have a fondness for these brands plus Buck and Case.

I carry a modern folder over a traditional because my nails don't hold up well. However, I am searching for a traditional that meets my needs and may have found it with the Case Seahorse. I just need to find one to handle.

Im surprised GEC hasnt really been mentioned much. I've had my #73 Scout in cocobolo in my pocket recently.

What old school pocket knife would I carry? It would have to be a jack knife pattern made by Great Eastern Cutlery; probably a #42.

I do carry a large 111 mm SAK (discontinued Adventurer model) just about every day for the last 15 years (or there abouts).

As far as modern knives being superior, that is a matter of opinion. But I like modern knives too.

Living in Europe, SAKs, Opinels and such are far more common than the American patterns (I never saw a Barlow, Trapper, Stockman etc. as a kid here).

So I guess for me it'd be one of the all time classics, like the Vic Classic. Its name just says it!

Always in the keychain, or a similar sized Vic ;)

I'm not very old yet (I'm 31), but I've loved knives since I was old enough to walk! Honestly, the most classic pocket knives I grew up seeing were the Buck 110 folder, and the various model SAKs my father owned. Both are great knives and I have bought newer versions and they still find their way into my rotation today. Although, after probably owning upwards of 250 knives, I FINALLY purchased my first Case knife, and I must say, it was truly a "where have you been all my life?" Moment! Lol. I ordered the Yellow Trapper CV model Case knife and from the moment I got it in my hand, I've been wondering why it's taken me almost 300 knives before I finally decided to try a Case? I guess something good did come of it though... Those other knives gave me THAT much more of an appreciation for a classic Case folder! <3 <3 <3

The original for which this is a replacement was lost in the early 1960s in a pile of fall leaves, while I was playing mumbledy-peg:

What I carry these days is the middle knife here:
