Best out of the box cutters

Benchmade 950 and Buck Alaskan 110 have been the sharpest out of the box for me.

Barring box cutters and razor type utility knives, the edc kind that I've had that's sharpest out of the box were Spyderco Calypso 3 and Victorinox one hand opening SAK (forget which model). Even sharper than those two but not an edc knife is a "country style" Japanese vegetable kitchen knife from Japan Woodworking Tools.

The best so far have been the two Fallkniven (TK1 and NL3) I recently purchased, with a Boker Infinity (ceramic) and Canal Street Bowie Hunter running a close second and third.

The Kershaw E.T. has been the sharpest OTB for me.
That Sandvik is some good stuff I tell ya!!

This is a distinction that can't be emphasized enough.

Yes, you are right. Sharpness is not tantamount to cutting ability, depending on what type of cutting needs to be done. A razor sharp edge does not mean that it will cut well through many things. Choose the right knife for the purpose.

Good point.

Why don't we hear more about Sandvik steels? I just got one in 19c27 and it's a goer. You know what I mean? Wink wink.

The sharpest knife out of the box was the 1st Buck Mayo folder.I don't know what model # it is but its the titanium handle framelock.I've got over 50 handmade folders and even more factory knives.I even have an RJ Martin but the Buck Mayo is The sharpest.
In general Spyderco,CRK,MicroTech,& Kershaw are amoung the sharpest from the box.

My Fallknivens and most of my Barkrivers. My U2 is literally too scary sharp to test the edge.

my Kershaw leek was damn sharp and I also have a Smith and Wesson black ops that actually popped hairs out the box. This was very surprising because its kinda a cheap knife. I got it for 20 and it retails for 50 so it was an ok deal.

Kudos to: Kershaw, they've been most consistent with hair popping edges.
Second is Spyderco, with a few knives coming less than hair popping sharp.
Third is (sorry) Cold Steel, They're very consistent with the few models I've handled.
Leatherman seems to do a pretty good job.
Last, oddly enough, is Benchmade. As I've had multiple knives come nearly dull with a thick burr, right out of the box (others have been hair popping sharp though).

most of the brands have been covered here that i'm familiar with...one of my sharpest was actually the blade on a Swisstool Spirit.

Being as I only have bought 3 knives(my collection is growing slowly but steadily.) I'd have to say out of my Kershaw Leek, BM 930, and BM Benchmite. The benchmite was actually the sharpest out of the box, which was very suprising to me. It cut paper better then my 930, shaved me better, and just cut all around a little better.

Ka-Bar Mule. Only knife I've ever bought that actually popped, not just shaved, hair off my arm. Beautifully polished edge.

OTB best cutters:
folder - Buck 110 - CS or prod
fixed - Buck 419 Kalinga Pro (S30V) tied with my six Bark Rivers

OTB worst cutters:
folder BM 551 Grip (440C), Bear MGC 297
fixed BM 201 Act + (D2)
