best paint for Little Giant hammer?

Is it really necessary to paint a tool like that? It's gonna get coated with grease/oil anyhow... not like it's gonna rust away. I'm just asking...

Forget all this crap about paint and make that cast iron shine! Hand sand it to 400 grit (no need to go all the way to 2000 since it's just a user and not a safe queen) then put on a coat or two of ren wax to keep the rust at bay.

If you want to see what happens when someone as anal retentive as Nick decides to clean up a tool check out Steve Lindsay's shop.

"Jim, I would sure like to get it power coated, that would be the cat's meow, but unfortunately it's a real bear-cat to move since I don't have a hyster."

Nick,
I figured you'd just carry it to the powder coater. :D Good luck getting all the grease off it. Of course we need pictures of the end result and your final selection of coating for the record.

Nick, I painted mine with Black spray paint from the hardware store over 10 years ago and it's still black. Don't over think this, just clean it up and paint it :)

Yeah, that 140# LG is goin to be nice :D

come on NICK your OCD is REALLY starting to show.
Walk over to wherever you keep your spray paint, shut your eyes, open the door, and pick a can. Let fate, and your spririt guides give you the answer:D

Kidding aside, the Little Giants always look good in standard "machinery grey". Plus knowing that in short time its going to have grease/oil stains over 50% of the surface, it blends nice with the grey.

Black looks to harsh for me, and green is well... just green.

Nick, On those that I painted up to sell, I waited until warm weather, put the hammer in a place where I could use the garden hose, and sprayed the whole thing down with Easy-off oven cleaner....sometimes it took a couple of times, but the oven cleaner will strip EVERYTHING down to bare metal. After rinsing/drying, I just used Krylon enamel. Don't go too overboard on the paint quality....if you lube it like its suppose to be, it gona be just like you said within a couple of months anyway.

Nick, The napa store that I used to work at carried a urethane paint that was made for equipment. It only came in the few colors found on equipment but one was a nice gray. three quarts of paint and a quart of hardener cost about eighty bucks. a mixed gallon should be enough to give your hammer three coats. you will need a decent automotive type gun for application.

I'll jump in on this. Since it's cast iron why not season it like an ole cast iron skillet. Heat it up and add plenty of lard. Makes a nice black finish that nothing will stick to.

Don't tell Don but I'm going over to Sid's this weekend and make fun of his 140#er.

I agree with Will that the epoxy paint is super tough - I've only ever seen the stuff he's talking about on concrete though, I don't know if it needs something porous to adhere well.

remember.. you gotta look at that sucka everyday.. ..so i'd paint it a color as to blend in with the shop.. .. instead of some distractin hot roddy hawaiian shirt theme with flowers on it..

i have this 125lb anvil that i painted up with black por-15 paint... oh it doesn't rust at all... but touch a hot piece of iron to that paint and it stinks and fumes..

now i just use the cheepest black paint and touch them up every so often when i'm expecting company over.. .. ( paint hides the dirt, makes it look new !)

besides... they leak oil.. ( had to say it again :D;) )
just like those old 2stroke detroit diesels... if they aren't leaking oil, then their runnin dry

I think you should paint a racing stripe on it. I'm sorry if someone already suggested this, I didn't bother to read the whole thread.

:p :D

Wow... sounds like its gonna be a beauty:thumbup:
Sid's DVD on it has a specific green color and number but it sounds like you're going with durability and a custom look.... got some places on mine I want to paint as well... think I'll follow this thread and get some tips...

Wow... thanks for nothing!

Oh wait, I didn't actually read anyone's responses to my own question! :foot: :D

You're all right... probably overthinking it. I just wanted to make it look nice since it's not everyday you have one of these things in all its little pieces. Unless you're Sid. ;)

Craig, I've got Sid's video too... definitely one of the best videos of this type that I've seen/own. I talked to Sid quite a bit about it on the phone the other day. He sure is a great guy!!! :D

I wanted to go to his hammer rebuilding class this coming week-end, but I just couldn't swing it.

Of course my main concern is the best possible control and maximizing the striking force.

I probably will go with the Hammerite or Tractor paint because it should be pretty tough, but easy to touch up if needed.

Although a candy pearlescent blue would be pretty kick ass! ;) :D

Thanks everybody!

Oh, and the correct answer for the contest was "Mujiber" Unfortunately, you all lost.

Now that just ain't right. What does he do there, Brain Surgery?

I'll be drooling all day.

#19 please, and thanks for the offer Mr. Whirler.

Elrod

That's just disgusting..... how are you supposed to work in there?

Reminds me of a local taxidermist that was gonig to teach me to do some squirrel mounts. Most taxidermy shops are horrid places, this was almost as clean as Lindsay's shop. All his stuff was in coffee cans, all the same brand and size with all the tops oriented the same way. He'd show me how to do something then spend 10 minutes putting everything back and organizing the tops. I was like errrrrrr I got diarrhea... got to go home.

Yup... Sid is the absolute best  always willing to listen and help....

Now you got me thinking about LG finishes.... although... I'll tell you... pick something that goes well with alot of grease, oil, scale and grime.... mine came with a bunch of it on it... then when I wiped it off in areas... it was that cool green color... like it was new:D
