Best Pepper Spray???

On the other hand, 2 weeks ago NYPD officers sprayed a knife wielding man on a street at least 6 times. He kept coming at the officers and was finally shot. Wind, drugs and alcohol in subjects system and his mental condition are all factors.

Why would somebody deploy a non-lethal weapon against a person wielding a lethal weapon? That's NY style logic for you I guess...

While that is probably true, I have seen somewhere in the neighborhood of 600+ soldiers sprayed with OC and it affected every single one of them very similarly....

During training we were sprayed with OC..... while I felt like I had powdered glass in my eyes and a blow torch to my face for 45 minutes, two of my classmates were giggling and saying, "I don't feel anything haha". OC affects most people to a certain extent, but there are some of those freaks out there who for some weird reason are not affected so if you're planning on carrying it as a defensive weapon... just have a back up plan. Another problem with OC is that you cannot use it indoors, unless you want to get blinded too.

A) Because he looked to just be pacing back and forth with the knife in his hand. OC is usually used on people who are passively resisting.

B) If the guy is just standing there or walking around with a knife...... you can't exactly shoot him, and it's not safe for you to approach him...... hence the OC.

i read somewhere that ordinary wasp/hornet spray is effective and has a long reach. anybody know?

That is true . . . and it is a LOT cheaper too . . . BUT not only is it a federal offense to spray someone with insecticide, it will give them blisters on their face and burn the eyes out of their head. You will definitely go to prison for that. May as well use foaming oven cleaner on them. Stick with Mace.

If you're a cop? Sure you can. That was NY. I'm surprised they didn't empty their magazines at him.

I am a firm believer that it is NOT the dog's fault, but the OWNERS fault when it comes down to that-- I spray everything -- the porch--the door--everything EXCEPT the dog. I figure someone has to clean up the mess!! And I doubt they will want to let fido loose again. I am more worried about the people here. I am constantly approached -"Can I hold a dollar". Crime is on the rise in a BAD way!
I want sticky gel!!!!

Sticky gel is like Silly String From Hell . . only you need to remember to rinse the nozzle with hot water after you use it or it will clog and the next time you push that button nothing will happen.

For outdoor use against dogs in low wind, streamers work fine. Any name brand will do. The cheap no-name brand might not.

You can get a big can of pepper spray also. 16 oz. should get it done.

The thing about giant fire extinguisher sized cans of OC is that nobody wants to carry them . . . and if you leave them in the car on a hot day they can burst. Frankly, unless you have a duty belt or a purse, even the 4 oz cans are too big. 2 oz can is adequate for civilian use, easy to pocket, and has a good 4-6 squirts.

It fits my 511 MOAB 10, Snukpak response pack, my camera pack etc. If I need one small enough for my pocket, I carry muzzle dog repellent by Mace. I have an ASP street defender that carries quite a bit of spray and makes for a good impact weapon.

When choosing pepper spray its important to look at the ingredients as well as the SHU rating and the concentration of Caps. Just because its a particualr rating on the Schoville scale does not mean that it will be more powerful than something else rated less...look at the concentration/potency.

Also important to look and see if it is water or if it is oil activated. I'm told that the water-activated stuff is worse, but the oil-activated kind seems to be sold more often.

Pretty sure that bear spray isn't legal to use on humans, not that it would stop me if I had absolutely nothing else and my life was at stake...

I just bought a couple Fox 5.3 in 2.5oz at Walmart for 17.00 but I'm not about to test them on myself. I bought them for dogs and tweekers when I'm out metal detecting. Bear spray is supposed to be weaker than human spray and wasp spray doesn't work, look for the video on youtube.

I'm retired from a state Dept of Corrections, so I've been around OC "a few" times. I'm one of those who could function when sprayed or exposed to OC, but my vision & breathing wasn't the best. We used it indoors frequently, but it was usually during a planned use of force, so we had time to gear up with our gas masks & overalls.

On a funny note: We once had two county sheriff deputies pick up one of our inmates to take him back to his home county for a court date. They weren't even off prison property when the inmate decided that he wasn't going to participate. The deputy on the passenger side of the transport van turned around & sprayed the the IM with OC. They won't do that again. The deputies bailed out of the van & it looked like a Chinese fire drill, only with everybody coughing & bawling.

Take a look at the Kimber PepperBlaster 2. It has 10% OC (2.4% capsaicinoid content) with benzyl alcohol for viscosity.
