Who makes the best Swiss Army Knife in your opinion? What is your favorite model and why?

Victorinox.
Rucksack. I mainly use an SAK in the woods. The Rucksack has all I need with nothing unneccesary. Victorinox has better workmanship than Wenger, IMO.

Victorinox makes the SwissTool. Enough said

The only SAK I still have is the big Wenger, I don't know the model name. It's just over 1 1/2 " wide, which is too big for comfortable carry. I keep it on my desk.

Since I got my Leatherman Supertool, I gave my other SAKs away. But I like the scissors (and small pliers) on the Wenger rather than the Victorinox, with their fragile spring.

I have never seen quality control problems on any SAK, Victorinox or Wenger.

I like both Wenger and Victorinox.
I have about 8 SAKs (some Wenger, others Vics) but my favorite is the Victorinox Pioneer.
I love the aluminum alox scales and it has a nice size blade but can still fit in my pocket.
I'm still waiting to buy a large lock-blade SAK (it will probably be either the Locksmith or the Trailmaster by Victorinox).

I like the Victorinox Super Tinker. I need a philips much more often then a corkscrew. Haven't been without one since I was 12.

I agree with bfm. I like the super tinker with the phillips screw driver and the scissors. However sometimes when I take it out into the woods I wish it had a saw blade.

Is there any way to custom make a SAK with the tools you want and nothing else?

Hi,

First: the best model for you is the one you allways carry on you.

Second: I prefer Victorinox above Wenger + in the 25+ years that I've been carrying Victorinox knives I've had ONE breakage of the tiny scissors return spring.

Every Victorinox dealer has a small setup of specially made swiss precisson tools (just wish I had that setup) to remove the broken end of the spring, ream the hole to size and put in a new replacement and all this for a Dollar or so.

Comparing a Leatherman Supertool to the SwissTool is like comparing apples to pears

I’ve owned lot of SAK’s over the years including models of both brands. I’ve found Victorinox to be of a higher quality, eg better fit and finish.

Get a Pioneer or Soldier with the Alox handles. They have a somewhat thicker blade than the red plastic handled models. These two are basically the same knife although the Pioneer has a lanyard ring (Victorinox calls it a key ring…must be for really tiny keys.)

The Alox stands up better to the rigors of daily use than does the plastic. A Soldier or Pioneer goes in the left pocket with keys and change EVERY DAY. The right pocket is reserved for the knife of the day.

I also prefer V-nox to Wenger though the model I am now carrying is a Wenger Snife.
IMO V-nox makes a better quality product.
Springs are stronger, blades seem to get and
stay sharper longer. Pioneer is a great model. Have had one for years. Also never without one for over 25 years+. Plus not viewed as weapons as most knives can be.

Victorinox classic in black.

Completely indespensible. I use the scissors like 10 times a day, no exaggeration. Does not set off airport metal detectors. Even has a toothpick. And fits into the little pocket on the right front of blue jeans (what are those pockets for anyway, watches?). Although I don't carry it in there when I have a one hand folder clipped to the large right pocket, as it interferes with my draw.

I also have a Wenger Soldier with aluminum scales. I like it, but it came with a small concave irregularity in the belly of the knife blade. It still works fine, but if I ever replace it I'll go Victorinox.

I've been considering a V-nox Soldier, and now, hearing the great comments about it, i just have one question. How is strength at the blade-scales junction with the pivot pin. it looks weak, but appearances are often deceiving. So, how does it hold up in the field? thanks.

Here's a post I made in another thread last week.

My favorite small knife is my Victorinox Mini-ChampII SAK. Between the two knife blades, the flat and Phillips-head screwdrivers, the small scissors, "orange-peel cutter" hooked blade, tweezers, retractable and replacable blue ball-point pen, as well as other tools, it gets far more use than any of my other knives. All this in a 2.25" package. Can't be beat!

It's the same length as the Classic model, but thicker to accomodate the extra tools. I don't think there's another knife that even comes close to the tool selection, size
efficiency, and overall daily utility out there.

I like Victorinox models better. In general their fit and finish are better and they easier to open. The model I carry all the time is the Explorer with a mini-screwdriver in the corkscrew. I use the scissors and the various screwdrivers the most. The in-line Phillips driver is more handy than the T-grip on the models where the Phillips replaces the corkscrew. Of corse thats just my opinion, I could be wrong. (To rip off Dennis Miller)

I have models from both Victorinox and Wenger. Both make great knives, but IMO
Victorinox knives are better made. Also, on the standard models, the Victorinox models just seem more sleek...the large flat screwdriver doesn't stick out sharply in the closed position like on the Wengers.

The Wengers, esp. on the small, compact models, do not snap open and closed like the Victorinox's.

I have a lot of Victornioxes, also the Swisstool and the large Trailmaster liner lock SAK. But my favorites for daily carry now are the black Classic and the black Tinker. These two compliment each other beautifully for daily urban use. If I were going camping I MIGHT substitute the Tinker with my red Hiker model with the saw blade.

I agree with Senator - the Victorinox MiniChamp II with ball point pen is great! I also have a Victorinox Workchamp I like a lot and keep in a nylon sheath. It has nylon scales and a large locking blade. Then there's my Wenger Pocket Tool Chest which has a great little eyeglass screwdriver, but I think I prefer the Victorinox overall. My only complaint on the MiniChamp II is that the shiny red scales will eventually be all scratched up.

It would be way cool if they used polished g-10 scales like the new Microtech LCC. And heck, while I'm at it, BG42 steel for all the tools!!!
