Best SAK ???

I like the Victorinox better then the wegner and the one I use the most is the champ I always find some use for it. I have aboout 8 differant ones and carry depends on where I am going and If I am carring my fanny pack. The S.A.K. is a good knife to pull out around sheeple you can always explain it as a tool.

Ok -for my .02 - Victorinox gets the lead. In probably 35 years I had one sissor spring break and I carry a "classic" on my keys all the time. The next favorite would have to be the "tinker" a phillips is a lot handier than the corkscrew for me.. I have about 8 vic's - all Boy Scout models that were "official" at one time or another. love them all !

Use to carry a VSAK Champion (pre-Champ, also have 2 other Champs in my collection as well as other VSAKs and the WSAK Toolchest) all the time (usually wear baggy pants so it didn't bother me too much in my pocket). The keyring is a bit flimsy and failed to the point of being filed down flush and attached the keyring to the corkscrew. (Small eyeglass screwdriver was very handy as I wear glasses but went through 3 of them. Kept on getting lost somehow and the metal shaft gets loose after heavy use.) Overall a good knife. The only gripe I had about it is that the tools do not lock. I've busted my knuckles a few times from collapsing screwdriver tools and got cut (minor) once or twice with the knife collapsing.

Have since moved up to the Gerber and Leatherman multi-tools which are more practical and rebust for what I use them for.

I couldn´t decide whether to miss the corkscrew or the Phillips. After some hard brain storming I just gave up and bought a SwissChamp, which has both features. I am very pleased with the Champ, even though some people would say it´s a little to broad and heavy. But that´s just the reason why I like it. The additional broadness gives it a superb stability while usage.

Vnox Trailmaster!

Same as the Rucksack, except with Phillips screwdriver instead of corkscrew. No, I probably don't use the Phillips more often; I just prefer its smoother (less obtrusive) feel as part of the handle when closed.

Victorinox Fireman--
I only carry a SAK when in a rural or outdoors environment. I like the Fireman model because of its size, handle material and choice of tools (Spearpoint 4" blade, locking; working woodsaw; serrated sheepsfoot style blade; phillips screwdriver; and of course the everpresent, bottle opener, can opener/ flathead screwdriver, tweezers and toothpick) For urban environments I don't find that I typically need anything more than a couple of good knives because other tools are usually pretty close.

Of course, my son proudly carries and uses his Victorinox Camper I bought for him for his 9th Birthday (he had to have a corkscrew). I can't wait until the youngest shows a little bit more responsiblity so I can introduce him to a SAK, too.

Thanks for all the feedback people. I happened to visit Smoky Mountain Knife Works today, and I took a look at their SAKs. I really wanted a knife with a locking blade and a saw, and I settled on the Rucksack. I've never really liked SAKs too much because they always seemed so squatty and ill-designed for the hand. I was impressed, however, by the longer shape of this knife as well as the contours that provide a much firmer grip than the older SAKs. Can't wait to take it camping and give it a try.

The Victorinox Camper seems to complement the original Leatherman nicely as it has a corkscrew with a small screwdriver nested in it, a saw, small knife blade, and tweezers and toothpick. The large blade, can opener and screwdriver/bottle opener provide minimal duplication and a useful backup in the case of the larger blade. I was given a Champ with the survival pouch and it has earned it's keep. My favorite single daily carry is probably the Scientist, which has a neat set of tools; Phillips on top opposite a magnifier, large blade, screwdriver/opener, corkscrew, pen, toothpick, tweezers, and a straight pin, as I recall.

Victorinox Huntsman.

The Swiss traditionalists go for the Victorinox.

I'm half Swiss and had my first at the age of 8. My son will have his first in three years time, as part of his education.

I like the Victorinox Hiker. I like the fact that it has a saw, an awl, and a phillips screwdriver instead of the corkscrew.

Stop when you get to bone.

For my money, Victorinox is king. I do like the Wenger, and their pliers and a few of their other tools seem to be better designed. But, the saw on the Victorinox is wickedly sharp. As opposed to the Wenger saw, which is worthless. My favorite Victorinox is one I dont think they make any more(at least I cant find them anymore), and I dont even know the model name. The one I am talking about is the big green one with the Mauser stamp on the side. What a SAK! One big spear blade, one big clip blade, a larger wicked saw, can opener/bottle opener, corkscrew, and maybe a few other tools I cannot remember. I try to pick these up whenever I see them at shows, but lately they have been getting expensive.

The SAK I carry everyday is the Wenger Handyman. It has most of the tools I like and none that I consider useless.

I have one of both victorinox and wegner and prefer the victorinox. Either company would be a good choice though.

I'm wanting to get my son, 10 years old, and a Cub Scout, a nice knife for Xmas. I have seen some nice Scout knives at AGRussel.com, but I personally was thinking more along the lines of a V SAK.

What would you give a 10 year old boy? I want to give him something good and special, and also utilitarian and practical, and of high quality. Doesn't have to be big... Just the right amount of tools like scissors, saw, knive, awl, and others if can be. But, those are the basics I think he will use.

I bought my 9 year old son a Victorinox "Camper" 7 months ago for his birthday. It has the tools and size you are looking for except for the scissors. I know that I will irritate some here by saying that I don't care for the scissors. Redundant. They do work, but they take up space, and if you keep the blades sharp they will certainly cut anything that the scissors could have. It also promotes sharpening and blade handling.

My son loves the SAK and uses it every day for something. The only time he doesn't carry it is to school. My 6 year old can't wait for the time when he will receive one. I can't either :-)

My favorite is my Black Victorinox Swiss Champ. It has the highest "cool factor" among my "non-knife" friends. I like to have it on hand when I am doing little projects around the house. It also always rides with my family when we are taking trips. If you get the Swiss Champ you must aquire the Victorinox Extra Large leather sheath with sharpening steel. I received my new SMKW catalog yesterday and they have a new Victorinox that is even bigger than the Swiss Champ, it has added the bit-driver feature of the Cybertool.

Without sissors Hiker, with Fieldmaster (pluss it has that hook; whatever that is.

With so many models to choose from it will be tough, but I think kids like saws and magnifying glasses for some reason. I would say try to find one with both of those tools.
And try not to get mad when he disassembles everything in the house.
