Best self defense machete? (or other blade)

So you're going back to the Caribean and want to go to the beach with friends. And the problem is you're worried about being attacked by machete wielding thugs?

Can you swim?
You bumped a 1year old thread, the OP is probably mugged and raped by now lol.

Often in knife fights, there isn't much difference in finishing first and finishing second.!!!!

With all of the fabulous Caribbean islands, I'm just rather amazed that someone would intentionally go to any of the terrible ones.

Ka Bar Kukri is pretty good. Not to big, Not to Small. It will make somebody think twice before messin with ya.

The other thing you should consider is that if you do buy a fully functional sword or machete and accidentally kill someone with it, aren't you going to get in trouble with the authorities, even if it was self-defense?? Some of the weapons mentioned above would be appropriate for medieval battles but ask yourself if you really have the stomach for a real life sword fight, something most of us have never seen in our lifetime except in movies.

The best option would be not to go there, however if you have no choice, consider nonlethal options like a Taser, Mace, pepper spray or a baseball bat. If you want a crude stick type weapon, get a police baton, escrima sticks or 2-3 ft of copper plumbing pipe. Or buy the cheapest machete you can find and file the edge off of it so it won't cut, even without a sharp edge, getting hit with a long thin piece of steel, the amount of force exerted on a small area will produce a lot of injury.

I use my machetes and kukris and goloks for cutting plants, but I don't think I would want to be held by the police for chopping off someone's arm, even if it was self defense.
Baseball bats are not non-lethal, but a good choice in this situation, especially if accompanied by a ball and some gloves. Looks very innocent, yet a baseball bat is an awesome weapon, and even a man with a machete is going to think twice about victimizing someone carrying one in his hands.

How about a LaGana style tomahawk? Or a shingler's or rigger's hatchet from Estwing? When not fighting off bad guys you could use it on side jobs.

Assuming two adversaries of equal capabilities, the guy with the baseball bat will win the confrontation with the guy with the machete every time.

I just have to sit back and laugh at this one. What kind of moron will A) Go someplace where machete-weilding thugs are a common occurance, and B) Bring his own machete from his home country? Yeah, THAT is going to be easy to explain in Customs... If you are that stressed, either don't go, or get a machete once you get there. And just for the record, the outcome of knife fights is usually one dead and one in the hospital. Do you really want to find out which one you'd be? I swear, this thread is as bad as the "what knife should I take kayaking with me to defend against great white sharks?" thread a while back. Get a clue people. Don't put yourselves in the stupid situation in the first place. Duh!

I think the guy implied that large groups are not much bothered by these folks, especially when a machete or two is visibly part of their gear. Sorry, but this makes sense to me. Deterrence, if effective, means you won't have to be involved in knife fight. That's the general idea, I think.

Now, as for getting one through customs, that might indeed be a problem, unless he's yachting to this place, in which case it wouldn't be a problem.

For SD,it just needs to fit nicely in the hand and have relatively good balance..machetes have crap balance tho.

Years ago I used to live in the Caribbean. Some violent places. We would never go to the isolated beaches without a big group, especially at night because robbery, rape, and murder were a real problem. Firearms are outlawed, so the most common weapon was the machete. They are used to cut sugar cane, fish and pretty much anything else.

Well, I might be headed back and I want a good machete type weapon. Ideas would be great.

Wow, you are one of those bladeforums mythical unicorns that only posts once every leap year .

If it is such an issue, just get one there. A machete isn't exactly a well-balanced, highly specialized, fine tool. It is heavy, and useful for whacking things. The best ones I have are no-name home made ones fron the Philipines. I am sure that something like them would be made locally anyplace they are commonly used. You would be amazed at what kind of wicked things can be made with an old leaf spring and a grinder. And I will agree, a visable weapon is a great deterant. But I also think that he was making much ado about nothing.
