Best Sharpening System for under $100

Mistakaroo,
I have found the grinder (1" x 30") at harborfreight.com for 30.00 (+s&h - 5.00) and the belts at discount abrasives, e-mail Kim @ discount_abrasives@yahoo.com, shes cool. I haven't ordered anything yet as I was hoping for more information from this thread first. The belts are cheap assuming they don't ware out fast. 24 - 400 grit are .45 ea and 500-800 grit .75 ea but they come in packs of 10. If I had to make the call right now this is what I would order because it is the cheapest I have found. If you know where to get that green finishing stuff let me know. I hope I was some help.

I saw the two belt sanders at HF for $30 and $40. Shipping is really nice too because they charge by the price, not the weight. I think I saw that they carry belts too, and shipping is free if you spend over $50. Now for the good part. I just ordered the 204MF and it should be arriving tomorrow morning :D :D :D. Reason I went with it was because 1)$45 shipped next day 2)I only have the Delica as of now to sharpen 3)Space was a concern. I dont have a garage or workshop.

I will look into the DMT X-Coarse for reprofiling jobs and will continue to read this thread and if I get more serious into knives, the belt sander will be on my to buy list. Thanks everyone.

If you have been following this thread you will know that I really had no idea what to do. The decisions I have made I have been happy with because there was a reason behind them all. The help I have recieved from this forum has been top notch. As you probably know, I have the lansky system, I enjoy it, I can sit down in my chair and sharpen knives in front of the TV. It would be perfect if I was just shapening my knives but I got the crazy idea to sharpen other peoples knives and didn't know how how popular of an idea it was going to be. I can't keep up and I still have so much to learn. It looks like the grinder will pay for itself quickly. I also overlooked the fact that many peoples knives have been severely mis treated and need more than the Lansky can provide.

I would like to persue knife making now and don't know where to start. I thought of getting a 1 x 30 grinder to aid my sharpening process, will this be a usefull puchase when I start making knives? Thanks matt d:confused:

matt - it's time to take this discussion to ShopTalk...:D  :D

Many folks have started making knives with no power equipment at all. Email me your address and I'll send you a book that will help you get started (or at least make your blood boil with excitement and anticipation...:D)

You're on the brink, Matt.

"Come to the dark side, my son...."

And pendentive pulls another one over to the dark side, the evel feend. :)

Cool thread, just getting into sharpening myself. I have a question though, the Edgepro seems to rotate on a fixed point causing the stone to actually move in arc rather tha a straight side-to-side motion. I'm trying to envision how it gets an even bevel with this arcing motion. Is it that the arc motion doesn't matter because the stone is off the blade everywhere it is outside the bevel angle?
