Best single edged tool for survival.

If it were my only edged tool it would probably be an 18" Condor El Salvador (or ESEE Lite Machete which is the same thing but with a micarta handle.)

Up north a small 18 - 24 inch woods/hunter's axe. Down south 18 inch machete. Their downside is they are not very small or inconspicuos to carry around if that's important.

If just one then it's going to depend on the area. In this immediate area I'd choose one of my 7"ish camp/survival knives from JK or Bruce Culberson. If I was going to be around actual trees (not just cell antennas in the shape of trees) I'd bring a Bark River Golok.

I'd really like try an ATAX for a day. To me it looks like a knife that makes so many compromises for the sake of versatility that it may not perform many of it's intended tasks very well. The price is a bit steep too. If it was half the price it would probably be a great addition to the trunk of the car for emergencies.

Or snow and nealley axe

A knife that is big enough to chop and split wood but not so big you can't do finer camp chores - BK2 for me.

I would take an axe and a medium large knife. Today the blade would probably be my Dozier Wilderness knife. Tomorrow who knows. I could not limit it to one sharp edged tool and actually survive beyond slow starvation.

I'd like to see something between the Skachet and the ATAX, they both have their merits, but could be improved upon. Koyote is working on such a project I believe.... Pitdog's Knatchet also look very good to me (Ineed one of those..):

A very interesting and thought provoking thread and I've enjoyed it thus far. But I personally have to go back to that recent thread we had here about a hatchet and knife. Because I personally think if you're going to do any more than one day in the timber or any survival situation I fervently believe those 2 tools are bare necessities.

Myself I wouldn't do one overnight unless I had 2 good folders, at least 1 good fixed blade, and 1 hatchet. About a week ago a friend of mine and myself camped out for 2 days in northern Arkansas and I had several knives and a Carbon V, Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri and I ended up using all of them for something. If I was to pick just one edged tool and had to survive for a very short period of time I would probably take the Gurkha Kukri. The more I use both of mine the more I'm impressed with them for many reasons. And Cold Steel made some good ones for hard use.

Only one edged tool...

Personally for my location, I would choose the GB mini

Kind regards
Mick

Mick that is Southern Australia I assume i.e. not the rain forrest of Queensland or the coastal north?

For me Probably Fallniven F1 or S1 - possibly as I don't have a GB mini!!

HB Forge Shawnee throwing hawk, a knife an axe and a long range weapon built into less than a 2 pound package. Definately one of my favorites. Either that or the millenia-honored Puuko.

I like the concept of the ATAX, but it seems like too much thought went into the engineering of it.....

ROCK6

My thoughts exactly. I'm working with the two pieces I'm borrowing. I see the skatchet and the atax as different tools, and think that they are going to end up with different "responses" from me.

But the ATAX, notably, has too much going on for me. That's really all I have to say right now aside from noting that as usual, I'm taking my response and starting with a medeival piece and working from there.

Christof,

Bring it:thumbup:

I think a simple, fairly light weight chopper fits the bill nicely. The Bark River Golok is a real champ...and good at keeping wildlife under control.
