Best Singular Knife for Survival?

Where's Marci?:D

Smatchet?

The one where both of them have folding knife blades?

You're basically implying that if you add enough extra crap to a folding knife it suddenly stops being a folding knife that you have to count for the purpose of telling how many knives you have with you.

Which one of these multitools with pliers and knife blades isn't a knife?

Meh. Multi-tools =/= folders.

Leatherman.

I once asked a relative who had spent a year or so sailing from village to village in Central America (very primitive, no money, middle of nowhere, jungle/rain forest stuff ..) what one thing she would bring with her if and when she did that again, figuring she would say "swiss army knife" or some kind of hat or water filter.... She said, immediately

"Baby wipes."

Oh...and I appear to be alive, and I am carrying a Case Red Bone Peanut.

Baby wipes and a case peanut??

You won't last long in that horrific survival situation that's sure to arise out of nowhere while your making your daily trip to walmart

:D

Because bad things don't happen unexpectedly. Right?

Well I got no baby wipes. But I do have more than one knife on me, including a Leatherman at all times. And I know where my towel is.

I am, and always will be a sucker for that "one wonder knife do it all survival blade" idea. But it's a silly idea. Too bad...it would be totally awesome to walk around wearing the King of All Knives, that you could kill bears, zombies, terrorists, and ne'er-do-wells with, start fires, chop wood, climb mountains, escape from subway tunnels with, etc etc etc.

But, in the end, being situationally aware enough to see a bad scene coming and get away from it is probably a much more powerful tool.

Do you like to refer to squares as rectangles as well? I do. It throws people off. :D

As far as the OP's question. Depends. If I had to pick one knife for every environment it would be a SAK. And that's only because I could never get in the habit of carrying a plier based multitool. Too clunky and heavy.

Not what I said. I'm a big believer in preparedness myself. Every time I leave the house, I've got a primary folder, a leatherman juice, a waved kerambit, and a keychain full of useful crap like a ferro rod, makeshift lock picks, carabiner, flashlight, etc.

But if a situation should arise, even like the one above, I don't think there's much that I would need a thick-stocked 7 inch Rambo survival knife for. Nothing to baton inside a Walmart:p

A little knowledge would be a lot more useful, and it doesn't take up space or add any more weight to my belt

I suggest the Tops b.o.b qualifies. Durable. Multi-use. In survival I want to be able to keep warm, build shelter, cook food, and protect others and myself.

I'd say that the best knife is the one you have confidence in and are comfortable using. The standard "old" answer from a couple years ago would have been Kabar Becker BK-2. Only one person mentioned a BK-9 so far. Things are changing. Knives are trendy.

There are so many different scenarios that it is most difficult to choose one knife. But I will list my current favorites and today the choice would likely be one of these three; Dozier Wilderness knife, Dozier Pro Guides Knife, or Blackjack 125. The Blackjack 1-7 would certainly be a reasonable choice.

I will say that I will always have a SAK in my pocket regardless of what scenario presented itself.

I've had several Survive Knives, the GSO 3.5 and 4.1.
I'd take this one for the "one and only" knife in a survival situation; likely in CPM-3V.

I may be a bit biased when I say BK9, but I have yet to see a knife that I would rather have in a survival situation. BK2 is great if you want a sort of maybe jack of all trades, but it's too big for such a small knife, and it's too small for such a big knife.

Everyday I carry a Leatherman Juice S2, Spyderco Delica, and usually a larger Cold Steel folder ranging from a Rajah 3, Recon 1, Spartan, Large Espada, or XL Voyager, etc. The Leatherman Juice sees the most use by far, second comes the Spyderco. The Cold Steel is generally never used, it's there only as a brute force back up in case things get weird.

If I had to pick just one, for me it would be either a Leatherman Super Tool or Wave. Those tools are by far the most useful in a suburban survival situation.
