Best Singular Knife for Survival?

ZT 0550. I live in the burbs, and I've experienced a little stretch of homelessness. It doesn't take much to get a lot done.

On firearms forums the "ideal self defense gun" question is frequently raised, and the answer is based on size, effectiveness, accuracy, reliability, capacity and scenario. The resulting conclusions are, predictably, all over the place. Everything from a 12 gauge derringer to a scoped assault rifle to a tiny .22.

Scenario trumps every other consideration because "survival", like "defense", is a catch all for situations so unfathomably different that they bear almost no resemblance to each other. Most of us flash to living in a jungle or forest. What are we actually using the knife for in those places? What about in city after an earthquake? What about in a tundra or on a mountainside after a plane crash? What if you are living off small animals like birds?

I'm sure the most common answer will be a fixed blade somewhere between a Mora and Kukri. I'm not sure if either of those is as capable as a SAK with a saw, awl and tweezers.

In the end it will come down to what fantasy survival scenario the poster's favorite knife style fits into. I don't even like SAKs that much - but the more I screw around with one in the woods, the more I realize that knife styles assume certain range of problems, and multitools do not as much.

Someone should make a fixed blade with a saw, tweezers, scissors, awl, screw driver and can open that fold out of the handle.

I agree wholeheartedly. I've often wondered this myself. I really dig the knife in the link Rich S. posted, but have often wondered why more companies haven't tried to do this. Especially if they can do it and it not be too gimmicky. The Schrade SCHF2SM seems pretty cool with it's screwdriver bit assortment that comes in the hollow handle. When I first saw that thing I thought to myself, "Why would I want that?", but after a while I started to see some practical uses for it. I've not had the opportunity to handle or test one but I'd consider it. It might really appeal to me if they integrated a "real" sawback into the spine.

I keep wanting to go to a BK9 or BK7 in the back of my mind. Especially if I modified it to do some tasks similar to the way the TOPS Tahoma Field knife is designed but with some variations that I think would help me in the long run. Although a good multitool would be ideal in many a situations. The questions just popped into my head so quickly and really got me to thinking. Thinking so much in fact that I didn't realize how difficult it is to come up with just one thing. But everyone's comments so far have been awesome. I've even seen some great suggestions that I never even thought of.

As for ideal situations, my next project it to use one of my favorite fixed blades and have a custom kydex sheath made for it that will incorporate a flashlight, lighter instead of a ferro rod, and an attachment sheath for a mutlitool of some sort. I.e. the Leatherman Wave or Charge. Now as for one knife to rule them all?? I dunno... perhaps one I could modify to fit more of my needs, but the RX-79G sort of hit the nail on the head with that one.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

If it's anyone but myself then you'd better be ready to give my the knife you chose for me to carry. :)

I meant that YOU should choose your knife, and if survival of any type is a concern, then choose with that in mind.

Your post made it sound like the knife that you have with you might be selected randomly. So instead of just ending up with a serrated karambit, maybe something more flexible should be given priority.

If I can bring only one KNIFE, but also other tools, like axe/saw, probably a multi tool, like Super Tool 300. If I can only bring one tool, probably Scrapyard 711 or 911 or BK7 or 9.

Busse Mr Mofo CG.

If it really has to be a singular KNIFE.

I'd rather have a custom shop INFI Rattle Hawk.

Damn it. Picture didn't load... (ignore this post, I worked it out. Well, my wife did).

Esee 5. A multitool or sak would be a second pick. But if only one.... A stout dependable fixed blade for sure.

Well I always have a leqtherman micra and delica on my person. That or the micra and zt 0350 so I could do a lot of stuff with just that. I also have a lighter because I have no idea how to use a bowdrill or any other kind of primative fire starting method. In the woods I have that and a fixed blade of around 4" long so I almost never have just one blade the premise of one knife is lost on me, as I'm sure it is for most people on "blade"forums
