Best size (Camp Knife)

i think i like the FSH for camping, whats the size difference between it and the camp tramp though?
FSH - 8" blade, 1/4" INFI, Micarta Handles, 14" OAL
Camp Tramp - 7 1/2" blade, 1/4" SR101, T/Resiprene C Handles, 12 1/2" OAL

There isn't just one.

It all depends on where I'm going and how I'm going to get there. For example there is not much use for a chopper if you are going 2,000 ft above the tree line.

And I'm not taking a FBM if I plan on packing 45-55 lbs. in over 24 miles in two days. :grumpy: I'd rather take food!

But if I'm going to do a drift trip or fly in fly out... well there is nothing better than a FBM:thumbup: and a Badger III:thumbup:

there is an article in tactical knives this month about the " ultimate trio" i don't know if i need three knives but i'm definately taking two. most likely a GW or a sak to accompany the FSH.

Tony G has it right IMHO. I do mostly truck camping or camping that involves 1-3 hours of packing. For those situations, personally, I would bring 3 to 4...

1 medium to large blade - SH, HH, Camp Tramp, HR, RatWeiler, FBM
1 or 2 Multi-Tools - SAK/Wenger and/or a Leatherman
1 small blade - GW, Bandicoot

Of course, deciding would be tough as I would want to bring the entire Busse/Swamp Rat collection...

That thing is freakin' beautiful! Awesome for you man!

Of course for me, the best camp/everything knife is the ST Ripper.;)

Another vote for a HH GW/SAK combo.

Honestly, I can do really well if I "cheese out" and just bring a RW. Light enough for food prep and detail work - great chopper for it's size/weight due to the grip configuration.

(The HOGs yell "Boo! Hiss-snort!"). ;)

If I am on my motorbike and a little extra weight is not to big a deal then my Dogfather with my Gerber multitool in the pouch is my first choice. The DF replaces an axe and machete then I have the little knife on the gerber for eating and opening packages etc. I might add the Buck Hartsook as well.

If I am on foot then something like the Dumpster Mutt or even a Warden is enough knife. I am really regreting missing out on those Sage Wardens they are sexy. My guess as to why the militart wants sage handles is they will match both desert and woodlands camo?

For me, it has become this ZTSH Variant. It blends just the right mixture of size, weight, and comfort.

I agree....this one is a unique beauty. Doesn't look like she's been broken in on a camping trip yet :-) I don't think I'd bring myself to make it anything other than a safe queen.

The picture was taken by a previous owner. It has lots of love marks now, but I have no good pictures in its used state. I'll have to remedy that.

As far as the discussion about auto-camping vs. backpacking, my knives stay the same while the other cutters vary. If I am able to have lots of heavy stuff nearby, I prefer a big bow saw and hatchet for firewood duty.

OK, considering all factors including one knife, ease of carry, versatility, etc., etc., of the Busses I own and have used under such conditions, SH-e is the best all around woods knife Jerry has ever made. SHBA (although limited in experience compared to SH-e) runs a close second. I really want to give a SHSH a good workout though.
That ugly thing Rat-30 has pictured could probably do a decent job.

Rat, care to let me give it a try? If I like it, I'll give you a few bucks, several other rare Busse's, two fingers from my right hand, etc., in trade.

One of these two... Don't know which one yet, both are safe queens at the moment, but i want to convert one to a user. What do you think, which one should i make a user? Especially for camping, hiking etc...

The SFNO is the better choice of the 2 you have.
The SHSH Nuke Heart Variant's sharpened top edge would make it difficult to baton.
