Best Small Fixed Blade Survival knife

As far as the job or what I mean by survival; I tend to day-hike and take 2-3 day camping trips with some bushcrafting thrown into the mix. However, I'm really hoping to extend my camping trips over the next couple of years. So I want to improve my skills and learn which tools/supplies will work the best for me. Other than that, I use knives in everyday utility, food prep etc.

Ah. So by "survival" you mean "day hiking and weekend camping." That happens all the time...it would make things so much easier if people said what they meant.

A Vic Farmer will be more than enough to take care of all your needs, especially at your "early stage of learning".

If you really hanker for a fixed blade, I'd suggest a Mora or AG Russell Bird and Trout.

If must have something " survival," get some black coated thing with stenciling on the blade....an orange handle is also de rigueur.

I'll continue on about the KA-BAR BK14, check out this video by vininull regarding hard use testing, turn on English subtitles if you don't speak Russian.

You can also get yourself a custom knife sheath for it, or for others at [Not a Paid Dealer Member], if your not happy with the kydex sheath that you receive with the knife, which is made in Taiwan. I myself have one on order, I'm looking forward to the day I get it in the mail.

I am guessing you made a type-o and instead of four inches you meant fourteen inches.

With that information now being brought to our attention and fixed I would like to suggest the Ontario SP10 Marine Raider as your survival knife. With a blade of less than 10 inches you are well under the recommender length of fourteen inches.

The Marine Raider runs well under $100 and you can get it at less than $60 at most places.

If you are ever in the wilderness and need to survive this is the knife to do it with.

PS. I hope you realize I am kidding around and that every suggestion so far are really good choices and that GSO 4.1 has me interested.

Great Post!

I love the GSO 4.1 but it's out of my price range unless I can find a great deal.

I cant remember the last time I went camping/hiking that I didn't bring along a Victorinox of some sort....theyre just too darn handy not to have. a Farmer and a Mora of your choice fit well within your budget and will handle most cutting chores that a fella will encounter on a weekend camping trip. just my .02

Mora Robust for under $15 in my hike bag, Mora BC Black also very nice but at double the price.

Tops Delta Unit 3, has a 3 1/2" blade, that's 1/4" thick! Sheath rotates for carry options, heavy duty compact knife.

IMO the best two choices would be a 4" genuine leuku from one of the Nordic makers or a DPx HEST fixed blade. Werks fer me.

Dpx gear best is a solid knife for right around your price range. Have a look see and good luck

Good call...the heft 4 looks promising to me. Also ESEE 4 and Becker tweeners.

Add...scrapyard 411 is in the price range too.

At 4 inches it would be a puukko, not a leuku, I believe. But a puukko would be an excellent choice.

Take a look at Doug Ritter's RSK Mk5[/URL].

Seems like an awfully tiny knife to bring along on a hike. Remember, he's not looking for some shtf emergency backup, he's looking for a knife to take on day hikes and for weekend camping.

try checking out the crkt minimalist
my favorite is the tanto model but there's also a wharncliffe and a bowie style
very affordable too

Becker bk11, bk14, or even the bk24 all fantastic little knives. Within the same line (but with larger blades) the bk15, bk16, or bk17. All fantastic bang for your buck knives. Also want to throw in the SYKCO 311, I have been carrying one for a while now and I absolutely love it. Also cannot go wrong with about any Mora. Paired with a Vic Farmer or a leatherman wave and you'd be set.

+1 on the custom forums, especially on Duck Childress knives, for about one hundred bucks, gets a great knife in any good quality steels, good kydex sheath.
