Best SS Klean Kanteen Size ???

koyote,

Like I said, the 40 oz has a outside diameter that allows it to nest in the same cups and pots that a standard nalgene bottle does.

Will a 27oz fit inside a maxpedition fatboy ? I really am only conidering a 18oz or 27oz. The others are too large for me right now.

My 18 Oz widemouth just fits in my Fatboy. Have no idea about a widemouth 27 oz, but if it's the same height but wider it would be a tight fit to get anything else in there in my opinion.

If you want a decent comparison, grab a 20oz pop bottle and cut the screw top off. That's roughly the size of the 18 oz Klean Kanteen, maybe a smidge taller. Stick that in your Fatboy and see what you think.

EDIT: I bet the 27 oz widemouth would fit if you laid it down sideways. I know the normal 27 oz won't fit at all, way too tall.

If you nix the Fatboy and buy the Jumbo model, you can carry any bottle size you like in the bottle holder pouch.

I have two widemouth 40 oz. they are tough as nails. I would recomend the widemouth, probably better in case you need room for a filter or something similar. Like rocketbomb stated bigger is better for long, or hot weather hikes. It never hurts to have too much water with you.

I am thinking that might be the way to go. I do not have either, just trying to find what works so I know what to get. I measured soup cans stacked up and now realize the 18 is kinda small. The 27oz might be the best inbetween size. I measured the water bottle that came in my cabelas pack and the 27oz is only about 1" taller, so I am thinking that might be the best size. Decisions Decisions....:D

I would go with the 40 oz, if you are going to boil/cook it is better. You won't fit 2 cups of water and a full package of ramen in the 27oz, try to eat/serve out of the narrow one is hard. I have also packed cold pasta salad with a fork inside for trail food then made soup in it after camp is set. Just more versatile IMO

Something else to remember is that 40 ounces of water really isn't a whole lot.

Correct. When a dehydrated meal may take as much as 2 cups for a single serving (16 oz, i.e. "Mountain House" brand), you are really carrying enough water for a short hike and a meal. But, the wide mouth bottles are supposed to mate with a MSR water filter...

i like the guyot nalgene design. Works great with my water filter and you can throw it in a fire and use it to cook in a pinch.

I usually carry my water in Gatorade bottles because they weigh almost nothing. Sometimes, I'll add a 27 oz. Klean Kanteen, though. I chose this size because IF I need to boil water, it will be an emergency. Stainless steel is heavy and the less of it I need to carry the better. The other advantage to the smaller diameter bottle is that you can heat water in it, and then tuck the bottle into your jacket for extra warmth. The 40 oz. is too big for this.

I prefer the narrow mouth for drinking out of. It also seems to boil water faster in a fire, due to the narrower mouth trapping more heat, but that's not really that big of a concern.

The wide mouth is nice for compatibility with filters, but otherwise a PITA - more likely to spill, both when drinking and when pouring water say into a freezer bag to cook a dehydrated meal.

best of both worlds for me.

I have 3 in the 27 oz (not wide mouth) and IMO they're the perfect size. The wide mouth looks nice though.

the one annoying design factor of the kk wide is you cant put in a "sippy" lid like on a nalgene the lid when screwed on pushes it into the bottle... if that top works ill deff be getting one
