I was wondering which knife you guys would consider to be a better survival knife:

1. Uncle Mofo DC
2. NMSFNO
3. SFNO Flat grind
4. Custom Shop FSH

I'm thinking about selling the NMSFNO and using my Uncle Mofo in its place as a camping knife. What do you guys think?

The age old question.

What do you mean by "survival knife"?

Some say the best survival knife is the one you have on you when you need it, and I have to agree with them. So carry a strong, high quality knife all the time.

But if you're asking which knife is the best for camping then you need to think about what you're going to be doing with it. I don't use my knives for food prep (I eat freeze dried food when I go backpacking) or cleaning game (not a hunter). I use mine for building fires and making tent stakes, things like that. So for me a 4-5 inch (blade) fixed-blade knife is best. I also carry a folding saw and multitool.

All the knives you listed seem a bit big for my tastes but any would work I think.

I've heard a lot of people say the NMSFNO may be the best all around knife. Why is that, and what is the purpose of the Uncle Mofo?

It's smaller than a BM, larger than the ASH or SFNO and lighter than a FSH but basically the same size as the FSH. Good all around blade that carries well on belt, strapped to your pack or inside your pack.

And......... it's the cheapest option........ NMSFNO's are priced right.

If overall length of the NMSFNO is an issue, there isn't much you can't do with a regular SFNOLE and they are also a bargain.

 Nice explanation....

When you compare the mid range knives in hand and when chopping the NMSFNO feels a very nice compromise knife. It reminds me of the balance and feel I like in a NMFBM .... but shorter. If the NMSFNO had a small bit of "gimping" like on the SAR knives for use with a ferro rod .... then for me it would be just about perfect. I would look at moving on numbers 1 and 3 before the NMSFNO .... probably number 3 the SFNO.... but the ones in your list are all good choices IMO .....

#1 or #2 will do in my book period. #1 makes a great chopper for a mid-size due to the angle and shape of the hilt. #2 is better for baton use and just general chore use. The NMSFNO hilt would be more comfortable for extended time handling IMHO. BUT if you wear gloves that point is mute. Not knowing where ya going, what your doing, when, with gloves w/o gloves etc etc etc!!!

Take'm both and when you get there do your owe test at what is best for you.

***I like the MOJO best cause I just like the feel better, but that's MHO*** Enjoy them all!!!

It depends upon a lot of variables, but: For me, generally speaking, the NMSFNO.

I'd personally pick a sabre SFNO or Ergo SH. The Mr MOFO will do everything the NMSFNO will do and look cooler doing it. Plus the hook may save your life in a knife fight. ;)

Dammit... I hate agreeing with everyone! I'd love to find some sort of witty alter-suggestion... but the NMSFNO is Da'Bomb!

I use her constantly... it can chop or slice with equal enthusiasm. :) There really is nothing it does not do well.

She kissed my finger a bit while batonning last night, but it wasn't anything a lil superglue couldn't fix. ;)

I'm sure it was just a *Loving* Kiss though!!!!!!!!!!!

But I agree too the NMSFNO is one great "All Around" Survival Knife...Now if I can just find another one... :) :) :)

Among those on the list prefer NMSFNO, but I'm a minimalist and I use Satin Jack Tac.

P.S. sorry for traslation.

So Far the BEst ive handled is the skinny ASH but for all your choices i think nmsfno is the way to go
