Best Survival Gear

I have a friend who spent several years on a small sailboat doing missionary work in very underdeveloped areas inm central and south America. I asked her if she did it again whart would she bring, and she said "Baby Wipes"

I spent about two weeks up in the Boundary Waters with a family that were regulars up there. I ate something bad at the motel we stayed at before heading out. I'll never poo poo toilet paper in a camping/survivalist setting again. No pun intended.

There are a number of items I would place above it for sheer survival, but, for psychological lift, there is little above a__wipe. ;)

It's not a complete list at all, sabre. For fire, I'd take some small flint and steel, a small bag of waterproof matches and if I have any extra room, a couple mini bics. As far as a good fixed blade, the biggest thing I need it to do is hold up to abuse. On the minute chance that I would have a survival bag tucked away, I MIGHT have a Ka-bar 1211 in there somewhere. That is, if I had one tucked away. You could go all out with a custom piece of stick to an old school buck 119

If I had to do some post apocalypse level survival and could only take one item, it'd be a roll of tp. I can burn it if I need to, and if I have to, I can scavenge the rest as I go

For me and I think some people would agree. Water, fire, and shelter. Fire is a big one. Mora light me fire is a good choice knife and a way to start fire.

Agreed. For me, the order would be slightly different. Water, shelter, and fire.

For fire, I am a big fan of the Aurora fire starter myself. Combine that with the file from a multi-tool or a SAK, and a small block of magnesium. You'll be good to go. You don't even need a knife blade. I consider the above my last resort. After matches and Bic lighters.:D

Yep.
A simple titanium bowl is just about perfect.
I take your point - but you're more up-market than me, with titanium and all.

My 'single survival item' would be an issue Cup, Canteen, Steel wrapped around an actual canteen - with water in it and a small-but-sharp knife in the canvas wrapper.

I know: I'm cheating, because I now have three survival items (water, cup/bowl/saucepan and tiny knife). But that's what survival is about: cheating the odds.

(And, just BTW, I have the above - and a good deal more - in the boot of my car "just in case". And I change the water.)

Yes, a G.I style canteen is the way to go.

Carried 'em for years and up to a point I have to agree with you. However, the newer water bottles offer large mouth openings and filter attachment. Two things I can't ignore. My canteens and canteen cups sit and collect dust now that I own Klean Kanteen and Nalgene bottles.

I admit I do miss my canteen cup though. There is something about drinking a warm beverage from a canteen cup when you're in the field. Combine that with eating eggs and SOS from the old steel mess kit first thing in the morning. Memories.:)

I know, that dates me. How many years ago did the army phase out the mess kit anyway?

Yeah things changed I use an hydration system + my G.I canteen cup and a Snowpeak no1 kettle when I hike.

If I may ask, which hydration system? I think that is my next step.

As for Snow Peak, I am familiar with their stoves and cooksets but have never seen or heard of their kettle. Do you carry a stove?

A folding Uberleben stoker wood stove and my hydration is a Waterfly 3L, cheap, it's ok no prob so far, the Snowpeak kettle is like a small Billy-pot, I like it.

Here's a pic
