Does not matter, spring-wise. Storing a spring under tension won't weaken it.

This question comes up again and again and again....

I store all of my folders open---it's their relaxed position. Probably best for the autos and assisteds. True it may be a minor thing but I prefer mine be stored with no tension anywhere. Common sense.

This is a perfect example of common sense being wrong.

I have opened switch blades that have been stored for 10+ years closed. Spring is just fine. I would store closed and not worry about it.

Your automobile is full of springs that are ALWAYS under load- suspension, oil pump system, fuel system including fuel pumps and fuel injectors, and engine valve springs. These can normally go for a lot of years with no change at all. I don't think knife springs will be much of a problem stored under load.

You're right. As I said, it's such a minor thing...that it's almost theoretical. Far more deadly things to worry about. Like lint......

Store how you want and makes you feel good. Properly made springs only wear out or break from repeated cycling. Not from being stored closed. even if done for decades.

As mentioned, springs wear out from repeated use, not being in one position or another.

The answer is yes, it will weaken the spring if left under compression, indisputable, no matter what anyone says. But it's the same as the fact that when you leave the ocean, the water clinging to your body makes the water level fall, it's true, but makes such a tiny change that it doesn't matter. Storing it open or closed won't make the spring too weak to use, let alone notice.

Technically, the long term storage will decrease the spring tension, but only slightly and not enough to effect function. For example if you took 2 coil springs, one brand new and one that has been compressed for a considerable amount of time and then compared them in size the one that was compressed will be of shorter length. It will still function fine, but albeit broken in.

Like I said it wouldn't effect function, for decades most likely. Maybe forever. I store all my spring knives closed, I'm not worried about it. I keep some firearm mags loaded 24/7, but most empty until needed. I store my striker fired pistols with the trigger pressed and gun un-cocked, so the striker spring doesn't remain under tension. Just my preference.
