best whittlin' knife?

Yo Elliot,

You are kill'n me here, now Ive got the, "Na,na,na,na,na,na,na,na, BATMAN", song in my head and I can't stop singing it!. :p :D :D

I guess I got you doubly good, Anthony, since I ended up deleting the post.
(Moderated my own dang post right outta the thread since I didn't get a rise out of anyone and it was off topic anyway. ;))

Glad you appreciated my moment, Anthony. :p

Oh, and kingmanted, forgive me for being tardy in extending you a warm welcome to our little corner of the universe.

Wow! I had no idea all this time that the main blades on a whittler of that type were so thick.

Thanks a ton for the photo - now for your next mission, should you decide to except it - Mission Impossible theme in the background - help me justify before the Head of the Financial Department (read: my wife) the need for the immediate requisition of said Whittler.

thx - cpr

Let's see...It's a Case...hmmmmmm...maybe get it in bubba-gum pink (eeeewww...choke...gag) and keep it hidden from view of the fellas...of course my rat kid will tell everyone daddy's got a pink knife...but I could say it's to support breast cancer research...

Don't worry, we have all done that a time or ten.. :D You'll get the hang of it soon enough.

orca & (Blues for the Batman post) ,

I am finding this thread particularly entertaining this afternoon. Thanks for your humor although it does sound vaguely familiar.. :D:thumbup:

You're very welcome for the photographs and description. I've always complemented whomever it was that engineered this pattern for its functionality. Like I previously mentioned, I have owned quite a few of these and found 100% of them to be extremely stout knives. The one in the photo's is an odd color bone (called Autumn Bone) that a friend of mine here in the forum sent me as a bonus in a trade some years back when I commented that it reminded me of Halloween(Thanks again Charlie!) that I will not use for that very reason(I know I am the sentimental sort sometimes). It always sits in my office used only as a worry stone or a paper weight. So I am sure she was glad to come out and play today..:D

Anywho, you can obtain these for a pretty reasonable price on the bay if'n you don't mind Navy Blue bone or some other color. I wouldn't get the bubble gum bone if it were me though. Just my humble opinion.

God Bless,

Anthony

Anthony, in keeping with the Batman theme, I'm surmising that this knife would be The Riddler's choice for best whittling knife...

I can hear him (Frank Gorshin) now...

Riddle me this, Batman...which one of these blades would you choose to whittle a nice block of basswood?

(For sure it'd be McGyver's choice! ;))

Elllllliottt,

Why is Frank wearing rubbbber gloves??.  .. He is starting to scare me..

Those are early prototype cut-resistant whittling gloves. Not to worry, Anthony. Nothing creepy going on there. ;)

Ohhhhh, OK then, as long everything is on the up & up..

.. Just don't drop anything and ask me to pick it up. :p :D

my favorite whittlin' knife is my schrade 340t old timer. the blades stay super sharp and the variety of blades is perfect for most chores.

Enjoy!

If you are going to consider 4-blade knives, the Boker Congress Carver is one to throw into the mix. I normally mostly use a small pen and coping blade (as others mentioned above), so a whittler pattern is what I use most of the time.

Nothin' creepy?! R-i-i-i-i-i-i-g-h-t. And we have the joker in the nurse-pullin'-on-the-rubber-gloves pose. Must be the first (rejected) take on that Blink 182 album cover. Eeeeeew!

Okay, I've narrowed my choices down to a couple; if I go with Case, it'll have to be Tru-Sharp (dang!) for now.

I have located a Bulldog brand with carbon blades, but I have no experience with that brand. Can anyone comment on Bulldog?

In the interest of our thread subject here (which we've shamelessly veered away from repeatedly :p) I may go for the Bulldog and write up an evaluation here for everyone.

Thanks again for the photos, sunnyd; I'm saving those.

thx - cpr

Hmmmm, my guidance counselor in high school never told me "professional whittler" was a career option!

I guess I have met half a dozen or so, some are doing "fuzz sticks " for christmas ornaments and like some small sculpting some birch bark cuttings.

TLM

I don't think it is on any list here either. :D

cpr,

My experience has been less than satisfactory with Bulldogs. I've purchased several in the past (mostly from the late Jim Parker) and ended up sending most back for poor steel that neither took nor held a good edge.

I went so far as to bring a couple to some shows where I showed the knives to a variety of makers and purveyors who shared the same opinion.

I've read several replies from others agreeing with my experiences here on bladeforums but at the same time there seems to be enough Bulldog fans around that it makes one wonder just what the heck the deal was.

Anyway, just my experience. YMMV and all that.

That's good to know; I'm glad I asked. We're on a single income, and while we're doing pretty well, I don't have too much extra $$ for these "trial & error" experiments. With school & boy scouts starting, I won't have that much time, either. (Don't have the time or patience to keep sending back and getting new just to get one that works . . . ) Some brands, like RR, are inexpensivew enough to just buy outright and mess around with.

I haven't researched Whittlers like I have other patterns, so I'll keep looking & asking for opinions here. Heck, for $50., a Case in Tru-Sharp ain't a bad deal; I just have too sharpen more often. (Boy I wish Schrade had made a carbon whittler like that.) My son & I are working on a collection of Case CV bladed patterns, with a focus on the yellow handled types.

Does anyone know if Case has made a yellow handled Seahorse Whittler? I don't see one anywhere, not even on fleabay. Contrary to the previous post, I AIN'T BUYIN' PINK, :grumpy: even if the wife does like the color.

thx - cpr
