A coulple things I'd like to add here are is that the older first and second run Bulldog brands do hold up well to hard use, take a good edge and hold one.. I've found the recent Bulldogs in pretty much any pattern I have tried just like Blues says,, with the exception of the very thinly ground blades found on the Peanut and Pen type patterns. So IMO, would refrain from purchasing a newer BD Whittler, Stockman or Congress pattern.
You and your son may want to check out the older Fight'n Rooster's in the above patterns I mentioned. They have some very nice carbon steel with a fine heat treat and grinds that I have found rivals some custom made's.
