Bevel grinding jigs

Rough grinding with a Bubble Jig allows you to remove maximum steel at each pass.
Mr. Rowe, are you still taking phone calls for help with the bubble jig? I've had one in a shop drawer for a couple years now and always had trouble getting it right. I've been grinding with a tilt table for a year now, and it isn't so bad but it has it's downfalls (scratches the flats so I always have to finish those last and that leaves some weird grind lines sometimes). I'm thinking about giving the bubble jig another shot when the school semester is over in a couple weeks but I might need some help.

Back at you; good to see you're still making knives. With your experience this little tool will be easy to master. Rough grinding with a BJ allows you to remove maximum steel at each pass. Give me your feedback. I respect your opinion.

Thank you for the kind words, Fred. I am just returning after a long spell away, so skills are rusty if not plain gone to age-related infirmities. We’ll see. The main plan is to have some fun again. My plans have need for flat grinding. Your jigs will help. I’ll gladly share my experiences. Take care, sir!

I'm about to build the jig linked below, but have to make the angle iron shorter due to limited real estate on the plate mod I'm making for my 1x30. The plate will be 5"x14". How short can I make the angle iron for it still to work well? My knives will be about 9-10" total length. Blade between 3-5". Thanks for any advice.

Your blade should be supported down whole length, your tang can stick out some if necessary. 14" working plate is quite large, you can easily do a 8" jig. Consider that even if you just put one set bolt in the middle you can go over the edge od working table (plate).

Thanks! What I'm planning to do is take some measurements to see if I can build something that I won't suddenly drop off the table when grinding. I can easily build something like that with the information you provided. That's exactly what I need to know. Thanks again for the feedback. Much appreciated.

I might be taking you up on that in May, my friend. I have to finish this semester and get some blanks ground for practicing.
