Beverages and Blades - Traditional of Course

I took this pic yesterday - amidst the rain and such. I let myself get a day behind on my advent calendar again but I got myself caught up.

Dec. 12th: Loncium Wiener Lager - a Vienna style Lager. This one, despite being "yet-another-Lager" is actually very good with a richness of flavor that I would expect out of a good Oktoberfest rather than a lager.

Dec. 13th: Dietrachinger Schwarze Tinte - What?! A Stout?! YESSSS!!!

I will follow up with today's selection shortly.

Pàdruig Pàdruig Some rich antler there too

Thank you, Will! Those two embody what I tend to favor most in good Stag.

Dec. 14th: Herrngiersdorfer Hallertauer Hopfen-Cuvee - a German Style Pils. This is an interesting beer, having been crafted with four different aroma hops. It has some hoppiness, a touch of sweetness and some spice on the finish. I was initially put off but as the beer warms a touch, the flavors are starting to really unveil.

December 14th. Another new/unopened bottle tonight…

High West American Prairie Bourbon. This (along with the High West Campfire I had recently) was a gift from a friend. It’s just a little sweet, with an interesting tart fruit flavor, and it goes down easy. Maybe a bit one-note, but not bad.

My biggest complaint about these High West whiskeys (and this goes for Eagle Rare and another bottle that’ll be coming up, too) is that these tall, skinny bottles don’t fit on the shelves where I keep most of the liquor. They’re too tall, so I have to keep them on the corner of the desk. :D

Fingers crossed today was the last day at the office of 2020. Working from home exclusively until the 4th or so :D

Edit - It's been over 20 years since I last had Bushmills, but I thought I'd pick a bottle up yesterday. I'm remembering why I liked it so much back then :)

December 15th of my DIY whisk(e)y advent calendar. We’re heading back to Scotland, though not in the most exciting fashion.

J&B Rare. Probably the most mass-produced whisky in this whole experiment (I’m trying to think if there’s anything else we haven’t got to yet, but I don’t think there is). I bought this bottle recently purely for nostalgic purpose, as this was the first scotch whisky I ever tried.

For a blended whisky, it’s not bad. It’s smooth, light in flavor but not unpleasant. Far from exciting, but certainly drinkable. I will say that, compared to all the whiskies I’ve had so far, I find the light color a bit off-putting. I won’t say what my first thought was, but you can probably figure it out.

I'm enjoying your whisk(e)y Advent reports, Barrett, although my going out to buy any of the liquor featured is very unlikely – I've been a beer-only guy for a looong time.

But knives are another matter entirely! What's that beauty of an equal-ender featured with the J&B?? French ivory covers and a spearpoint? Is there a secondary blade hiding on the pile side?

Thanks, GT! :D

I've been trying to keep the knives interesting. That last one is an Issard penknife and was a gift from @Jolipapa. It’s nice and slim, and yes, there’s an opposite-end small pen blade on the back side.

Thanks for the additional knife info, Barrett; that's an appealing equal-end pen knife!:cool::thumbsup:
Not sure what the attraction is, and I have several already, but it is what it is!:rolleyes:

It's not too late to broaden your horizons, Gary. I love beer, but just had some red wine with dinner. Have you not had good wine? You can get some good drinkable stuff for just a few bucks. And you have to try some single malt scotch--nectar of the gods. And nothing beats a good martini. Don't mean to corrupt you or anything, but I sure enjoy a wide range of "adult beverages." In moderation, of course. ;)
To each his own!

December 16th. Ugh. Let’s just get this over with.

Southern Comfort Fiery Pepper. I don’t remember how I ended up with this little airplane bottle. I’m certain it was purchased in jest at some point. I’ve had it for years, tucked away in a cabinet with rarely used bar tools and bottles of bitters.

Why did I add it to the list of whiskeys I put together for this? I don’t know. I guess I thought it would be funny. Maybe it is. Right now it doesn’t seem like it. It’s awful. Technically it’s not even whiskey.

I don’t think they even make this stuff anymore. If they do, they should stop. But if you do ever get the urge, just mix equal parts neutral grain alcohol, Karo syrup and Tabasco sauce. That’ll probably taste about right.

On principle, I’m going to finish this. But I’m not going to like it.
