Ken I'm all for that and even suggested it in the past but to cut it short basically it would fall in line with the fees as well and we just cant control how people pay. It's on them.

Which is why you should always fund PayPal payments by credit card - another layer of protection.

Of course, not cooperating in the seller's effort to defraud PayPal also helps.

I wish we had a sticky stating something to that effect on every sales forum.
I realize some don't read them, but they may notice something like...
"WARNING - Use Paypal gift at your own risk"

Ahemmm......:)

The Exchange Forum Rules said:
Warning: You as a buyer are responsible for using Paypal as it was intended, according to their Terms of Service. Using the "Gift" option revokes any buyer protection you may have if something goes wrong and makes it easier to get scammed. Be smart and protect yourself, if you use gift and get scammed don't come crying to us about it as you've already been advised.

It should go at the top of every thread, for sale or not. Right after the "don't pay up front for a custom" warning. Then again, for a lot of folks we would need to chew their food for them as well...

Thanks Karda. Most of us have heard about the 'Gift' rule but for some reason.....

Whole threads have been dedicated to this topic but for some reason....

Let me go out of my way to do everything possible to allow this seller to defraud me AND for some reason.....

Once again, from the top;
1. How long has this member actually been a member?
2. Why is he asking me to help him circumvent PayPal's rules on Purchases?
Hi, I'm selling this knife. I want you to pay me using an established payment company but when you send the funds click on option 1. All security and protection and resolution and recourse is Waived. Thanks.

A gift is a Gift. Here ya go. Enjoy. And when you call PayPal what exactly are you going to tell them?
"I gave a person I don't know $125 and now I'm having second thoughts but he won't call me back."

I do sympathize. You have just learned an expensive lesson that has been talked about over and over and over on this forum. And what did the seller actually save? 3.5%? No, sadly for this transaction, he MADE 100%.

And as we speak, there a at least two dozen threads in the exchange, right this minute, requesting you, the buyer, pay with PayPal Gift and we the members of this fine forum simply stand by and allow it. Here's how you stop it.
DON'T BUY FROM A SELLER WHO DOES THIS! Done.

Since you paid via gift the only real option you have is to contact your credit card directly.
I've done that this morning. Good advice. I have an open resolution dispute with Paypal as well. The charge card company will be contacting him to make good before turning things over to local authorities for fraud charges. Part of me is hoping he will contact me to just make good. At this point the money issue is secondary to the outright theft. Depending on the time it takes to resolve, I will make it my personal mission to alert folks to any sales offers or attempts at civil discussion among others he may have in this forum. He did review my personal profile again. Thank you all for your support and suggestions.

Glad to hear you now have the ball rolling. Good luck !

BTW- you won't have to worry about alerting others here. If he doesn't get your money back soon he will be banned. The Mods have already told him about this thread, and he's had plenty of time get your money back to you..

Responded to his add for Italian stiletto (Walt's Latama) for sale. Agreed to pay $125 Paypal and further agreed to send money designated as "gift". He last said he'd ship upon receipt of funds. This was on 7/28. I have not heard from him since. Tried contact through here as well as his email. He closed the F/S thread. I have contacted Paypal and am hoping for some help. I always hate to call some one out....but he has not responded in any way. I hope I can retract this accusation, but hope is fading.:grumpy:

Can't your PP account be frozen/deleted for this?

Why, why, why, do you guys think it is necessary to make things "easier for the seller?" The seller is not your buddy (unless in real life he IS a friend), not a family member and not some person you owe some duty to make his life enriched. By doing so you place yourself in the position of no recourse when you find out that the easy life for the seller is to steal your money.
Tell Paypal that in order to circumvent their fees you intentionally sent money for a SALE marked as a GIFT.

Then ask them to help...........................................................(insert appropriate emoticon ---> here <-------)

And while I know I am the 799th person to go bonkers over the gift thing and probably beating a dead horse, some still just do not get it!!!!

And a warning to wear your seat belt, do not drive drunk, treat every firearm as if it were loaded, never point a firearm at anyone you do not intend to shoot, do not exceed the speed limit (nah), do not buy clones or counterfeits, do not ask BRL how much the knife you bought at the flea market is worth, never take a pot shot at AGR, never sass a mod, never make fun of Kevin's Tutu, never ask silly questions about Strider knives, never and I mean never post when drunk and finally do not pay a maker up front, no matter what....................................................

All this in a stickly at the top ofe every thread also please:D:D:D:p:D

Oh, oh, oh oh and do not pay with the gift provision on Paypal or any theft by the seller will turn out to be a gift from you to him. Try reporting this to the Police, all he has to do is show that you sent the money via paypal as a GIFT!!!

Well Edward Oconnor is truly a hustler that is for sure . . Just shameful a man would sell out for $125 .

I just bailed on a deal for a knife when after we agreed on a deal he came back at me with a Pay Pal gift request . I promptly canceled the deal for the simple reason of changing the terms. But it didn't feel right to me . He was pissed calling me every name in the book. But that's OK because my money is in my pocket not his.

OP I hope this works out for you. I always do what others have said above. Not only do I use pay pal but I pay with a credit card to boot . When I receive the item then I pay the bill. Added protection. Basically you have to treat almost everyone as a suspect. The world we live in today.

Top ten post of all time.....!

Stop paying with the gift option!!!

From the rules:
Warning: You as a buyer are responsible for using Paypal as it was intended, according to their Terms of Service. Using the "Gift" option revokes any buyer protection you may have if something goes wrong and makes it easier to get scammed. Be smart and protect yourself, if you use gift and get scammed don't come crying to us about it as you've already been advised.

I think he knows by now not to use the gift option people:D

No need to keep beating that into his brain.
Lets get off of the buyer and onto the seller please.

People can always start another thread about paypal Gift if they need to keep venting about that.

Yes, people need to read the rules, but most don't. I didn't for the first few years I was here, and just did what others did and all worked out fine. Many people do that, and thats why so many use the Gift option. I used Gift a few times before I knew better. They may see a sticky in the sales forum they're in, but many will never see that in the announcement rules. Thats just a fact.
Again, yes they should read the rules, and in a perfect world they would.

Getting back on topic...

OP, don't let this thread get to you.
You knew early that you made a mistake using Gift, but that doesn't give the seller the right to steal from you. I hope your CC gets in worked out.
Good luck !

Still wondering why the seller hasn't posted here.

I received a refund from Mr. OConnor this evening. Issue has been resolved. Thank you for any reminders that may have come his way from Blade Forum. Please lock this thread.
