If you are ever tempted by Mike Carroll's blades, a tale of caution...
After confirming the work first with him via email I sent him 2 Spyderco Renegades, one for Paua inlays and one as a reference in case the first went pearshaped, back in early June. I knew he was busy and told him I wouldn't wheedle him for 8 or so weeks.
Now he won't respond to my emails, his phone number won't work and I've discovered only today that I'm blocked from viewing his website. I'm going to check from work whether he's blocked my phone number also as the local gunshop seems able to contact him okay.
At no point was I anything but coutreous to this mongrel.
This is theft, pure and simple.

Do I tell the cops or pay him a visit? Hmmm...
 
Blocked you from his site??...wierd. Well, post his web-addy here..or his email...maybe a few letters from forumites will lite a fire under his a$$

Ooops, sorry guys, I should have pointed out this guy is one of the few local Australian custom makers with a website: www.rooblades.com.au
He's listed with international knife directories also, and was supposedly running a course with Ray Rogers from the US this month.
The latest is his phone has been disconnected. The local gun shop will be interested to hear this as they put in an order with him a month ago.
BTW, this and other recent GB & U posts only concern a couple of bad apples, everyone else (esp from BF) has been fantastic.

In my opinion, Mike Carroll is not a shady character in regards to his
former dealings concerning knifemaking. I lost contact with him many months
ago and therefore had to cancel my trip to Australia (which would have been
last week).

It has been very difficult for me to get information as to what has happened
to him. We talked every day concerning my trip and other business issues,
then the next day he was gone, that's it.

I knew his wife had been involved in a very serious auto accident about a
week before but was in stable condition. Whether this has any bearing on
his later actions I do not know but I eventually found out that Mike was in
jail on a very serious issue totally unrelated to his knife making business
which I believe he attempted to run in a trustworthy manner.

Bottom line: I have heard from some of his customers and I know they have
suffered losses. So far, I haven't heard from anyone who lost more than I
did (about $3000) but I still don't blame Mike for anything beyond a serious
lapse in judgement. He's out of business, apparently bankrupt, in jail
awaiting trial, possibly facing years in prison, with an invalid wife and
two children. He's not in a position to make knives or answer email.

I prefer to give him the benefit of the doubt concerning his knife making
business until such time as there is real evidence that he intended to
defraud anyone (which I doubt). I suspect each of us would appreciate the
same consideration when we stumble.

As for being locked out of his website - everyone is. The website has been shut down, probably because Mike isn't around to pay the bill.
 
Holy Guacamole! Thanks for the info Ray, I'm sorry to hear you were unable to make it over. I heard yesterday that Mike's wife had been in a serious accident and my sentiments to the source of that info, the Australian Knife Collectors Club, were the same i.e. lets give Mike a chance to recover and see what happens before getting the Police involved. Looks like things have taken a turn for the worse big time.
