I've just seen that there is still a keen interest in BG-42 blade steel.
I sure wish that Buck would bring it back as an option.

No way! ...then my BG42 blades won't be worth as much. :D I guess it doesn't matter as I am not going to sell them any time soon.

I am kicking myself for not picking up a BG42 master series 119 when they came out though... ;)

My 110 with BG-42 is my all time favorite and has been carried far,far more than all the rest of my knives combined. I prefer BG-42 over all other blade steels. I sure wish it was still available.

I got a bunch of them never used since Buck offered the re-blades i went ahead and got a bunch ,good thing too because they are gonna be RARE!LOL

I paid an arm and a leg for my Designer Series 110 with BG42 blade.Yeah,I wish they would offer it again!

What kind of baffles me is that there is an obvious demand for high end steel... Buck has out-sourced blades in the past
( Damascus ) ...I wonder if the numbers just aren't there for profitability ??

Over my years, it appears to me that the surest way to increase the popularity/demand for an item (guns, knives, etc.) is for the manufacturer to cease offering it.

I really like the BG-42 for initial sharpness and edge retention. I too wish Buck would bring it back. It'd be nice to have more than 2 or 3 steels to choose from, although the steels they offer now are great.

BG42. Superior steel. Not so easy to work with. Hard on equipment.

Higher production cost means reduced profits.

If Buck offered BG42 the sales of S30V would drop to almost zero.

Crucible would go ballistic.

BG42.....we hardly knew ya. Hail and farewell.

:)

Sorry to pull this in another direction, but how does BG-42 compare to other popular steels?
Isn't D2 similarly difficult to machine and work with?

Yes, D2 is also tough to work with......that's why they're not using it anymore.

They assembled a few existing D2 blades recently and I think they're all out.

They'll stick with S30V.

If these steels are so hard on equipment and tough to work with, then how are other manufacturers still producing cutlery with it ???

Its aprice point Buck probably needs to meet in order to keep going with the number of employees and cost of business nowadays, they most likely need to cut costs or end up like Schrade cutlery and fold up like the rest.

If I remember correctly, it was more of a supply issue that lead to the discontinuation of bg-42. There are more details to the story i am sure, but I dont have those details.
I am pretty sure that the last of the 110 blades in bg-42 was the special run we did for the Buck Collectors Club 20th anniversary celebration at the factory in 2008.
We were out of bg-42 blades at the time, or so they thought. I found a tray of them, and along with some leftover g-10 sides from a discontinued Strider/Buck model, the 110's were made.
