BG42 vs S30V

I'm away from my Spyderco sharpmaker for a little while, and have been using the heck out of my new sebenza....it's still very sharp.

I'm very impressed with the S30V steel. Very impressed.

I have owned BG42 and S30V sebenza's and never noticed any difference. I say save the $$ and get the S30V. You won't regret it!

Well I've decided to do something completely out of the box instead of getting a BG42 sebbie. I'm having a guy make a replacement blade in M4 steel with a opening hole instead of thumblugs. I will let you guys know how it turns out.

Let us know, I love how Barry H had a knifemaker make a modified wharnie out of some super sweet steel!

First off, I don't have ANY blades with BG42 to compare to S30V. I do however, and not by any design or plan, have several S30V blades that I rotate through. I haven't had any problems with that steel in sharpening, edge holding, or chipping. These blades are from BM, Buck, and CRK's.

For example, with my Lg Seb Classic this past weekend, I dug in the dirt pretty hard killing a monster black widow we found, cleaned a couple of fish, whittled a few marshmallow stakes, and did food prep for our scouts camping with no issues at all. Still sharp at the end and I got it back to "scary" sharp in about 5 minutes with the Sharpmaker when we got home.

I mentioned this in another thread on the "General Discussion" forum, but I'll repost it here. In the Feb 2010 issue of Blade, there is a small excerpt in one the articles with Paul Bos talking about heat treating S30V steel to the right HRC. He says the 58.5-59 is optimal for this steel for toughness and edge holding, and that it starts to get "chippy" at 61HRC. CRK's are treated to 58-59 of course, so they are really in the sweetspot. I would assume that other quality manufacturers like BM, Spyderco, Strider, et. al. know what they're doing as well.

Bottom line is - it's good stuff. Maybe a couple of minor trade offs with BG42 with regard to hardness and edgeholding, but not much and you should be very happy with the current CRK's that use it.

Excellent, you just made me subscribe to this thread :)

I'm thinking about getting a BG42 Sebbie. For those of you that have tried Sebbies with both steels. Which steel do you prefer and why?

Thanks.

Chris does an awesome job with the S30V, I've never had a chipping problem. BG-42 is my favorite.
