BHK Bushcrafter: First Impressions

My BHK Bushy finally arrived! I was harassed to no end by my wife this afternoon as I impatiently and repeatedly checked the mailbox, hoping I’d find a present! I may have scared the poor mailman as well, I barely let him get it into the box before pouncing on it like a cat on a bird. I whipped out the SAK and tore into my new toy.

It was packaged very tastefully, the blade with cardboard cover and well-wrapped in padding. Included were the JRE sheath and a letter explaining the history and make-up of the bushcrafter. (This info can also be found on their website, so I won’t regurgitate too much of it.) The knife came with a very good edge on it, most certainly shaving sharp. I’m always grateful for this; it really burns me when a company or maker ships a dull knife. What the hell is a person paying for if they’re getting a knife that won’t cut? But this one cuts.

The fit & finish is really top notch on the BHK. The edge is even and polished with uniform grinds. The bluing is attractive and even. The maple handles are just plain gorgeous, as my wife immediately noted, with that depth you enjoy getting lost in. There are no gaps in the handles or uneven areas. The dimensions were roughly 7/8” thick for the handle and right at 1” tall. Slightly less thick than I prefer, but surprisingly comfortable. The stamps with my chosen serial number and the BHK ‘horse’ were very clear and straight. Here are some in-hand and comparison pics (Mora 510 pictured).

As I said, it has a good edge. It made some really handsome fuzzies very easily. Broad carving strokes, chest-lever cuts, and drilling were all very comfortable. The simple handle really allows a lot of versatility. When I first saw pics of this blade many months ago, I wondered if the gap between the end of the edge and the handle would be irritating or limiting. It was definitely a non-issue during woodwork; I had as much power and control as with my 510, for example.

The sheath was… a JRE sheath. I think everyone has seen or used these by now! I like them (and this one especially). It holds the blade and firesteel securely. It also has a lot of carry options. A standard belt loop, a D-ring, and a ‘dangler’ belt loop. I tried it on both ways and pictured, as another option to give some scale to the setup. If you don’t like the dangler portion, it can be tucked behind the belt and sheath where it was unnoticeable as far as comfort goes.

I hope those pics gave some good idea as to the size and ‘feel’ of the blade! Overall I’m just smitten with this blade. It’s compact and comfortable with a great edge. It’s one of those that just sort of screams, “Use me!!” The sheath really completes a tasteful and classy package for woods carry. I’m just amazed that Blind Horse Knives can offer a knife like this at this price point. These are all just ‘first impressions’ of course, and I’ll continue to keep this updated if my feelings change or if I have new observations. But for now, it’s a bushcraft knife I can comfortably recommend to both the ‘novice’ and seasoned woodsman alike. Please let me know if there are any questions I can help with!

looks like a nice knife. ive been looking forward to pics since i saw that you had one coming. that handle looks especially nice. by the way, i think you are my hand-twin. the only problems i have heard of woth their knves are that they use some sofeter steel. that and the unfortunate lack of a scnadi grind.

Thanks guys!

Haha, hand twins, we could go on the road and make millions! They list a 52-54 (I think) rockwell for their stuff. Working with it and sharpening it, I actually like it a lot. I hate when things are hard to sharpen. And I seem to recall them saying that they are working on both a scandi and a hatchet in the future, which would be neat.

Something else I forgot to mention, they kept the spine of the blade nice and crisp. Important to me, as the back of the blade is frankly a tool in its own right. Worked very well fuzzing up tinder and with a firesteel.

That knife is gorgeous and such an unbelievable value, I really want to get in on the next round of them. Great pics and write up, thanks for making me want one even more! :p

What a beautiful knife!:thumbup: Thanks for the first impressions spooky.

BTW, they need to use your pictures on their website; the one on there right now doesn't do the knife justice.

Great review Spooky and yet another very positive review for this BHK knife. Those gunstock walnut slabs are just stunning to look at. Also, we all know how fussy you are about handles so it speaks volume that you like the feel of this knife. Hope you get a lot of use out of it!

Some really nice photos of a beautiful knife.

Now you need a premium stocked muzzleloader equipped with the same wood to complete your attractive package. :)

Glad that you have yours, Spooky. Proud owner of #061, here! It's become my primary knife in the field.

Thanks for all the kind words, guys! I'm glad you liked the pics and thoughts, and got some use (or comfort) from the pics! If you're in the market for something similar to this I really don't think you could be disappointed.

wait, these are only $100?!

If you dont mind spook, is that right?

Haha, I said the exact same thing the first time I saw them! Like I said, I can't believe they can offer this blade at this price point. And that includes the JRE sheath at that price! Just amazing.
