BHK Bushcrafter: First Impressions

Thanks for all the kind words, guys! I'm glad you liked the pics and thoughts, and got some use (or comfort) from the pics! If you're in the market for something similar to this I really don't think you could be disappointed.

Haha, I said the exact same thing the first time I saw them! Like I said, I can't believe they can offer this blade at this price point. And that includes the JRE sheath at that price! Just amazing.

What can you compare 4140 to in terms of edge retention? do you find the RC of these knives too soft?

This is actually the first 4140 blade I've handled, Fonly! I think I recall reading that it's not at all a traditional knife steel, maybe even frowned upon (?). Looks like it also has slightly less carbon that 1095, for example. Hopefully one of the knifesmiths here can chime in?

In today's extremely limited use (bunch of fuzz sticks, some batoning, paper cutting, etc) I can say there was very little appreciable edge degradation. A quick strop on my jeans brought it back to shaving.

For me, a slightly 'softer' edge is quite a fine compromise, as I like to be able to quickly get an edge back on. I hate having to spend half a damn afternoon just trying to sharpen a blade that's gotten modestly dulled.

I got my #75 BHK Bushcrafter yesterday. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I like the ergonomics of the handles. There are no square edges, so heat spots shouldn't be a problem.
I was also astounded by the sheath. I didn't realise that it would be a JRE dangler. The blades are made from recycled saw blades, so that must enable them to keep the cost of the actual knife down. It is one hell of a package for $100.

thats what I like in a knife thats a user, hence why I like 1095 so much, thanks for the info.

Spooky,

What kind of belt are you wearing? Can you give me a link?

Also - I hate you... deeply.... I am GOING to have to order this knife I think! ;)

That is one of the nicest knives I have seen in quite some time. I'm a sucker for curly maple.
