Bad BHQ Customer Credit Card Data Breach 2021

I have a dedicated credit card for my online purchases. It's easy to watch, but my Credit Union always catches "suspicious, out of state activity", and blocks the purchases.
It happens once every 1-2 years. I kind of expect it now.

Read the letter in the OP again. I don't think that's quite how it worked. Sounds like the hackers were using a skimmer, which lifts the data after input, as it's being submitted for payment and/or storage. Likely before it's ever even encrypted. It doesn't sound like it was from anything being stored on their website (I rarely even do that, and it's only very temporarily if I do).

I did what you suggested, and you are totally right. Thank you for the correction !

My credit card was compromised about 3 or 4 weeks ago.
And I did order with BHQ and Grindworks during that period.
So now I know how they got my CC info.

This is a good reminder to use a credit card when you shop online and not your debit card. You have little or no liability for unauthorized use of your credit card, but someone can do serious damage to you if they have you debit card information. If you must use a debit card, it's a good idea to only have a balance sufficient to cover the purchases you made recently.

Also, if you use a credit card for autopays, it's a good idea to have a separate card dedicated to only that. If that card gets compromised, it's going to be easier to determine the source. More importantly, if the card(s) you use for regular purchased get compromised, you won't have to update all of your autopays.

Ah.. was wondering why people were talking about a Class Action lawsuit against BHQ on FB.. Figured it was because of the slow shipping.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

R Rich S When the intruders appear to have gained access to our hosted website server, they potentially gained the capacity to "skim" customer transaction data as it was being entered by the customers purchasing or attempting to purchase our merchandise.

If there are still any further questions regarding this matter I would recommend contacting our response center at (855) 723-1664 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM CST.

What will you be doing for customers who have been negatively impacted by this?

This is a great idea. Like many here I have had to have cc's replaced several times in the past from fraudulent activity, and it's always a huge pain to update all of those autopay accounts. I appreciate the advice!

I also got this email from BHQ today. Being new to this, I made several purchases through BHQ during the period mentioned. So far no consequences.

(Bold emphasis mine.)

Wow. So that's even worse than I thought. O_o Folks that even tried to purchase a popular exclusive in that timeframe (like the M4 Tanto PM2 I previously mentioned) and may have struck out, could have also potentially been affected by this. Sadly, there may be NO way to know who those folks were? Ouch. :poop:

Also, BladeHQ BladeHQ what can you do to guarantee me that my info isn’t compromised from an order that was placed on 12/11/20? You claim that this started sometime in January, but being that we are just now hearing about this, I’m skeptical about what really happened.

I've had a debit card hacked 2 times and I was reimbursed both times. It took a couple of days to get my money back but it wasn't a big deal.

Hmmm. I made a purchase during that period, but never got an e-mail. But I have my acct. info on their site, so didn't enter any new information for the purchase. I use an acct. that only gets funded for purchases, so the balance is about zero, until I decide to buy something, I transfer funds, the purchase is made, and the balance is zero again. (This also - almost - keeps down any "impulse" buys, since I actually have to contemplate it, at least a bit, before doing it.) My bank is also very quick to spot any unusual transactions, to the point that they notify me of almost half of my own purchases as possible fraud.

Always use a credit card for online purchases. You aren't liable for any fraudulent charges, so if any ever occur, your CC company will reverse the charges and send you a new card for free.

Made a purchase during the affected time.. No issues here.. Hang in there BHQ.. This too shall pass!! And I for one will continue to do business there!!

That's exactly what inspired me to do it. The last time my credit card was compromised and I was getting a new card issued, I asked the company if they would issue a new card and account specifically for autopays. They were happy to do it right away (FWIW, Discover card and bank has the best customer service I have experienced in any industry).

You're fortunate. Not all banks will do that and in most cases they are not obligated to do so. Credit cards offer far more protection across the board to consumers and don't really have a down side if you pay your balance each month.

True dat. And since you never pay any interest, if you have a card with Cash Rewards and no annual fee then they pay you to use their card.
