BHQ Excl. Lum Tanto?

Haha yep, I've got oil and locktite blue wicked up under the scales, looks like hell. Im going back to the traditional pocket knives section, I'll see myself out:(:D

I wonder if Sal is aware of these issues people are having? I'm sure he is, but it's always interesting hearing from The Man himself.

Seki City Spydercos have disappointed me enough times that I avoid the higher-end ones. The FRN models seem more consistent or my expectations are lower.
I agree, never had any issues with my Delicas, Enduras, etc. but the G10 models have been a bit off as of late.

was watching a bladehq video of lynn cold steel guy talking 2018 line and why his san mai isnt being made in japan anymore...im paraphrasing but said knife market shrinking and seki is very hot and humid and kids in japan dont want to work in that industry anymore. guess they think its too hard of work...sounds like americas kids and working with ones hands.....so knife making is shrinking and harder and more expensive to do there. now who knows if thats accurate or not...only Sal could comment on that or others in the first hand know. wonder if seki qc issues and high prices weve seen lately are due to this lack of skilled labor and kids?

that said my lum tanto is good other than off center blade. im over it already...and been using it. great knife and design..........

Like this Lum my ouroboros' action was also smooth but sluggish. Though the blade was centered.

I wonder about the hard detent ball against the soft outer laminate. What other liner/frame locks have laminated blades?

I've had some great Spyderco purchases lately, but this, echoing the sentiment of many others here, is a disappointment.

Put succinctly, I also got one with a very off center blade. And, like many others have stated, that alone might not be a deal-breaker. Unfortunately, the mark side liner and g-10 have enough of a gap that a subscription card can easily fit in it. On the plus side, mine isn't grinding yet.

Still on the fence about returning it. I was thinking maybe they could fix it in Golden, but then a return would probably be a lot less hassle...

Wow put me down for both problems. The center is way right. The blade isn't touching but damn close!
I saw the grinding posts so before I even opened it up I dropped some oil in. It wicks halfway up the scales. LOL no scratchyness
I'm not playing with returns. I'll live with it.

Blade grinds are cleaner and crisper than my grey Lum

I don't like playing the knee-jerk action return games (generally considered as bad juju) unless the faults and the flaws are blatantly egregious! On this one, I have the whole weekend to ponder while will also check Spyderco's own forums for more feedback / info.

Try out a Taichung spyderco and you will know what high standard QC means, like a Spyderco Mamba.

Love both my Slysz Bowie and also Spydiechef. Neither came this way which I currently love and had to be both dialed in and broken in but the initial quality of those two was more apparent right out of the box as compared to the Lum-Tanto.

This will be the 2nd knife out of 200 or so I’ve ever returned and the 1st Spyderco out of about 85. The other knife I returned was a Brous Caliper from a couple of years ago. This would have been the third but the Kershaw Natirix that I tried out just went in the trash after the stop pin popped out on first use...didn’t bother with the whole process.

I can't wait to be disappointed tomorrow :D

Lol, that gave me a good chuckle.

If the Spyderco Mamba wasn't so expensive, I'd probably consider it. Looks like a great knife.

I can that, though I figure this isn't an issue of not liking the knife, but it not being on par with either other knives at that price or simply what Spyderco is known for. I'm sure somebody will be all over the returns though, so that is a plus. This is assuming BHQ would/could relist them.

After waiting so long for a Lum tanto folder, and getting one ordered (to be delivered early next week, depending on weather delays), this thread is making me really nervous and somewhat depressed. I wonder how many of these have issues and who was asleep at the QC wheel? I own a pile of spydercos and have for many years, and have had only one with real issues. That was an early Southard (blade off center, would not flip). I also just ordered a Perrin PPT sprint (Taichung) and fully expect it to be flawless. I want the Lum tanto to be as well. If anyone has a problem one, and decides to keep it and try to get spyderco to fix it, I would be really curious to know what they can do.

Dammit for posting that! Mine is also scratchy when I put my ear near to it. Ah well, perhaps best to not keep a knife that I didn't fall in love with. BHQ & Spydie, this one is quite a mixed bag and NOT a home run.

One of my two is a dud. Scratches like the video. Way off center, nearly on the liner. The other one’s blade is centered at the tip, though there’s a slight bias to the non-lockside liner along the blade. The stop pin screw on the non-dud was nearly all the way unscrewed right out of the box.

I’m thinking BladeHQ is going to get a lot of returns. Ouch. What a clusterfv<€.

Wonder what the average number of returns is on your typical spyderco sprint run?
10%??
15%??
Can anyone start a poll?
It would be interesting to see a percentage of who is satisfied with the knife they received.
Seems like a low number out of box. A few guys got it where they wanted it after a little tinkering.
Something seems like it went south along the way.

MJ, mine is just as your “none-dud” unit. If I can dial in the smoothness without compromising the bladeplay, I will keep it. If I end up opening the knife, I will keep it no matter what because I totally respect Sal’s thread regarding that ghastly taking apart and then returning practice.

Ive had mine apart a few times. Its quite a brain bender trying to see if the blade centering can be fixed. You think you got it, then you open and close it a few times and youre right back where you started.
It seems the standoffs need to be a hair taller, so screws can be tightened to tight. And maybe the washers thinner?
I sure can appreciate the machining skill it involves to make a "Taichung" knife.
If I have time this weekend I'll play with some ideas.
