Big 'Ol Camp Knife

I seldom have need for leather sheaths, but this chopper demanded one.

That great philosopher and sage of the Customs subforum, Dr.Paul Long, when approached by Nick Wheeler with a build request for Bob Betzner, was said to have mumbled (lovingly, of course), "for that prick? Sure, why not. I'll do it Christmas Day and charge him double time-and-a-half".
What a guy! And with that, here are my very limited pics of the completed package.

Great stuff Bob

Enjoy the knife my friend

Joe, it's great to handle, along the lines of Jason Knight's. What defines the piece, at least for me, are the machined bevels. Mirror finishes and hand-rubbed satin finishes shout "don't use me", which is what mostly happens with collected customs.

There was only one such machined piece I ever owned that would keep yelling at me "use me" (a Criswell waki), and it was that which kept drawing me to it. This is the only other piece I've owned that's done the same. And that's what is at least as attractive to me as everything else about the piece.

Bob you have just summed up very distinctly what attracts me most to a blade :)

hey Bob, since it's got that working finish, you wouldn't mind sending it to me for a couple weeks of testing, wouldja? :)

After consultations with my advisers, and careful and deliberate consideration given to your recommendation, I'm recommending that further deliberations be given to your recommendation.;)

I'll stand at the ready! (in comfortable shoes)

Nick,
If you don't mind me asking, what is the thickness behind the edge on your choppers?

It really pisses me off how nice that knife is. And I hate that it chops like an absolute beast. Wanna make sumpthin of it? j/k of course... Beautiful Blade!

Amazing leather--- as expected!!! :)

Bob- Thank you for posting it after Paul did his magic.

BTW- since I got Paul's 3rd video for Christmas, I now know how he tooled that pattern! :D

***edited (about 3 times now! :grumpy:) to add*** gine- To be brutally honest, I'm not exactly sure because I don't measure that stuff anymore, I just go with what "feels right." To hazard a SWAG: I'd say it was flat ground from the spine down to about 0.020-0.025, a little thicker at the tip. Then I feathered in the convex geometry to take it down to pretty much sharp. :)

Hey Nick, I know I'm a Johny come lately to this thread, and it's all been said (boy that rhymes well, I think I could be a rapper) but I too like the knife. I think it's refreshing to see a guy skilled at the polish not afraid to finish a knife with a machine finish. I think that many people do not appreciate how hard it is to make a flawless machine finish.

Great job Nick and Paul and congrats Bob. As a side note, I was asked to make a knife for Bob and found him to not be a "p***k" at all, he was gracious and kind in every way.
