Big Shark Lock, 4" blade length , full thickness handle , budget materials , like the 4 Max Scout .

Great idea but I think the Demko's are running full tilt just to keep up with the premium product demand like the AD20's and Compacts! I would also love to see some Compacts and Whale Sharks in more affordable materials like G10 instead of Ti...maybe someday!!

I envision a budget version, made in Taiwan . Mass produced . Value / budget materials .

I don't know how much time /trouble that would require , but certainly easier than custom built . 👍

The standard-fare AD20 already has budget materials, in my book.
Plastic (G10) scales, stainless (not Ti) pocket clip and standoffs.
No real exotic materials, nor machining.
What other corners would you expect them to cut, in order to be more "budget"?

Where are these budget AD20's of which you speak ?

Must be hiding from me !

Anyways...less expensive steels and Grivory , maybe .

AD20XL size !

I took it as Doc wanted a full size Demko like a cold steel lite. aus10 steel, grn type handles, etc. value driven, but still a good overall knife.

Exactly .

I believe there would be a good market for it , different from the high end customs .

I know from the Cold Steel "Scout" and "Lite" versions of AD10 , AD15 and 4 Max ; that they can still be great strong , high performing knives , but substantially cheaper .

Gotcha. I was thinking you were more orienting your post towards the AD20, not the XL.
I guess time will tell. That XL is brand new, so perhaps they will make versions that at least aren't all Ti.
But I still think there is a limited amount they can do with the Shark Lock, to scale down the price. It would really seem like there is no way around the fact that they need that steel liner, between the lock and the scales.
So that will always necessitate that machining and labor. I can't comment on the actual cost differences between plastic and G10, or a CPM steel and something less sophisticated.

It does seem Demko brand knives bottom out around 2-3 times the price of the equivalent materials (but not lock) as Cold Steels made in the same place. Budget has a different meaning for these. My guess is/was scale of the company in comparison more than the cost of the lock, but it is probably some of both.

I'd suggest to offer the XL (or the straight AD20 for that matter) made in Taiwan. With Grivory scales and AUS10 or D2, less so to reduce costs, more so to distinguish it from US models. Much like the 20.5, which shows what price impact that could have .....

im not interested in any more d2 steel myself....but I do like Demkos aus10. good all around steel.

I don't mind D2 but understand. Only reason I mentioned it because one of the more affordable 20.5 came in K110.
im sure most are fine with it....I just never loved that steel. I'd love to see Demko bring in some Taiwan full size ad20 or ad20s all budget like we've discussed at a much lower price point than the 450 American made one costs. the ad20.5 is a great smallish thin knife. just small. needs an ad20 "lite" in the line up. various blades shapes. bowie would be great as an option.

This is why Bob Dozier never liked you.

Stay out of Arkansas...

Back in the old days, D2 had a reputation of being hard to sharpen.

Or, alternatively, being able to take a mediocre edge which it held on to for a long time.

So many platitudes, so little time.

I wouldn't hold your collective breathes, that Demko would start making AD20 models in Taiwan. They'd risk cannibalizing their USA-made sales, and what would that price delta even land at? They have the AD20.5 models as an obvious floor, so they'd be forced to try and price things in-between. As for blade steel, that would also be an unusual precedent; I can't think of anyone charging different prices, based on the steel. Demko doesn't, now, nor do other stalwarts, like Hinderer, etc.
