Big Spyderco folder

I've got a manix, chinook III and now a military in CMP-D2. I like the manix and chinook so I was wondering if spyderco is gonna come out with a big folder. Like their version of a BM630 and 610. I like what spyderco does with their steel, grinds and G-10. I don't know how anyone else feels but a 4.25inch blade manix should be all you need. Or a bigger chinook.

Yeah, Spyderco doesn't have "meaty/beefy" knives, if you ask me... Good knives, but not meaty.

yall need to wait this one out....i think the bug boys have a trick or two up the sleeves!

Tuff, tuff, tuff, tuff, tuff... Come on, everybody, with me... tuff, tuff, tuff, tuff...

I've been prodding for a five inch Chinook for a while. Apparently Sal doesn't like big folders though. The only blades longer than four inches have been on the Police and Catcherman, neither of which are very big knives (nothing against the Police, but it is pretty slim). I wouldn't get my hopes up for a mega folder from Spyderco.

Then you have the Tuff!

While it probably won't be more than four inches in blade length, it will be a one of a kind knife, and more capable than just about anything else in existence.

Tuff, tuff, tuff, tuff, tuff...

It's hard to justify producing a knife that's illegal for practically anyone to own who's not military or police. By that I refer to knives that have blades that are over four inches in length (in most jurisdictions). I LOVE big knives, and it's easy for me to carry them since I am rather large, but I find myself admiring the handiness and ease of carry of smaller knives such as the Delica.

However, I would love to see something made by Spyderco that would compete nicely with the Benchmade Rukus. Something with a 4.5 to 5 inch blade length, and a handle design that doesn't favor a particular grip and feels good with any grip style. Since I'm dreaming, I might as well add ZDP 189 steel, peel-ply carbon fiber handle and a compression lock. Something similar to the construction on the new Superhawk, but with a blade that could withstand light batoning (and doesn't have a "weight saving" false edge). Something (like the Rukus) that would make a nice folding survival/camp knife.

I'm just dreaming.

i really think spyderco needs to come out with bigger folders! preferably with ball lock or that lock the p'kal has.

I like big blades myself, like my Camillus CUDA Maxx and Cold Steel Vaquero Grande. But talking to Ken C. tonight, he was showing me his stainless steel Endura 4 again. Geeze, guys, that knife is a tank. Even the blade is so obviously strong, it hardly needs more length.

Spyderco practically owns the small knife market, right from the start they've innovated knives that seem almost too small at a glance, but perform really well in EDC situations.

I'm sure they will continue to offer the occasional heavy duty tactical configuration, but it is not their core constituency. :)

I like the ball lock. The P'kal uses a modified ball lock; the internal mechanism is the same. But I'd rather they stick with the simplicity and reliability of the backlock. But then, I'm older than Methuselah, so new stuff s c a r e s me.

:D

Another one who's curious as to where the Tuff is. Didn't see it in the A'dam 08 meet, so I'm wondering what's happening with it. Hopefully not on the backburner.:(

Tony. Tuff is being used here as a reference to a Big, Bad, Tough folder like the Manix and Chinook.

Apparently, Spyderco needs to make more models like this. I know I would love to have more.

thanks...i would love a supersized chinook I.;)

Looking forward to the TUFF also. Was reported to be a titanium scaled, compression lock with a beefed up pivot and special blade geometry to handle prying knife designed by Ed Schempp.

Here's the best official description I could find.
Sal asked me to design a folder that would be extremely strong. This "Tuff" folder is planned with heavy titanium scales with a compressor frame lock. This piece will have an unusual geometry incorporated in the blade to with stand alot more torsion and prying, and a larger stronger pivot....Thanks,Take Care...Ed

The blade steel was originally planned to be CPM 3V, however things have changed since then and steel choice is still up in the air.
Chances are whatever steel is used in the big Schempp chopper will be used in the folder as well.

I have an Endura 4 SS SE. I think it's probably a sturdier, better blade than even the Police model, and nearly the same size. It's also great for IWB carry--you hardly even know it's there, and neither does anyone else. ;)
