Big Spyderco folder

My friends, I fear that the Tuff will become as infamous as another "nuclear" folder... I assume that the Tuff will be available, in about two more weeks... :(

My heck, Sal... Just give us a pic, or a napkin sketch, or maybe a pic of some guy holding it, in a rag, so that you can only see the point of the blade, and the opposite end of the handle... anything....

The "Tuff" is till in R&D.

It's a great design by Ed Schempp. The Compression lock works well for the design. It's strong and reliable.

Issues have been;

I want a stronger self close for such a large heavy blade.
Finding a maker.

In my humble opinion, there's not much practical use for large folders. The larger a folder gets, the closer it gets in overall dimensions to a fixed blade. Is there much a 5" folder can do better than a 4" fixed blade, besides looking awesome when you flip it open? There is a point with folders where the advantages of a large blade are overtaken by the disadvantages of size and weight in the handle required to house said blade.

To my mind, any folder larger than 4" can be replaced with a more practical, smallish fixed blade, unless fixed blades are illegal in your jurisdiction.

I would prefer to carrying a Game Warden or a Koster Bushcraft over a large Manix, or anything larger than that (and I do). To each his own. There is nothing wrong with most Spydercos being in the same general size range. Most folders are around 3"-3.5" for good reasons. That's a good balance between cutting ability, weight, concealability, legality and levels of stress on lock mechanisms.

Speaking about a good balance between cutting ability, weight, concealability, legality and levels of stress on lock mechanisms, there's always the 5.5" CUDA Maxx. Legality, perhaps, aside. :)

Seriously, there are problems with a fixed blade in many jurisdictions. And sometimes a larger blade is appropriate, and technology has made a big folder feasible. No, it's not as strong, but if it doesn't have to lever rocks and cut through trees, it can be strong enough.

I would like to see a Spidy Civilian with a bigger and beefier blade/handle, and longer, around 7- 8" with a blade width (edge to spine) of around 2" near the pivot and mid blade.

Hey Sal, thanks for responding. It's so cool to know that you guys read the rantings of opinionated fanboys...like me. I promise to stop bugging you about the "Tuff" as soon as I have one or two. :)

At any rate, Sal, please make a bigger knife. If you don't, people will be stuck with Cold Steel as a source of bigger folders, and we can't have that! ;-)

Yeah ive been thinking about this knife for a while for me it should fit the bill perfect i thought i had the perfect hard use big folder in a 301 but i dont like AO my Rukus is the best one i have at present but this should take its place in my pocket when it comes out.I like my Manix as well but this sounds another level.
If it was made in 3v that be the best folder i could think of.

The Tuff is not a large blade, 3.75".

Is there really a demand for a 5" blade model? or just a few people looking?

4 inch would be the biggest folder id need.3.75 is about perfect IMO.
Dont see the point in a 5 inch folder unless law requires carrying folders.

What 5" folder is out there now?? Not many, maybe one(Cold Steel) still in production. I would like one, but do I need one?? No.
I feel there is a little demand for one, I think a sprint run would sell, but I doubt a full production piece would sell year after year.
I would love a 4.5" bladed Rock Lobster, or a 5" Shabaria.

3.75 is alright.
I'd just like to see the Chinook 3 with a beefier pivot and larger diametre washers; THAT would practically be my dream Spyderco.:)

An even 4inch blade would be good. Something slightly larger then the manix or chinook which we already have.

I do not know. Pre spyderco and while a patrol officer, my duty blade was the 5 inch Gunsite folder from Cold Steel. I thought that was the best folder in the world! It did some of everything and was cop tough.(Dropped, scraped, pried with, cut all sorts of material. The blade length was ideal. I never felt limited with the size, it actually helped.

Fixed blades for most cops are out of the question. A tough heavy duty beefy folder with modern technology would definately sell in my opinion, but I do not run a successful knife company. Right now my big folder is, sorry to say, the ruckus. I agree with fix blades being the first choice, but many folks due to laws and or occupation have to settle for a folder.

Come on Sal, take a stab,(no pun intended!) or look at it.:D

How about making it in 2 sizes? A 4" and a 5+" I like the idea of it having a strong self close; I wouldn't want to cut off anything vital while carrying IWB.

Yeah I agree. Thats why I wanted a big beefy folder with spyderco tech to back it up. I just hope they make enough cause they're going to sell A LOT!

For a while there was talk of a mega-folder from Spyderco called the Bison, but I believe the project was idled.

I for one would love a giant Spydie, but I understand the company's reluctance to produce and market a knife that few outside the knife world would purchase.

I have both a Camillus Cuda Maxx and a XXL Cold Steel, each modified for better ergonomics, but lately I rarely carry them. For self-defense or more mundane tasks, three to four inch blades suit me fine.

I do highly anticipate the new Police model, though.

Highly.

REALLY highly.

Hey Sal, maybe you could call the Pharmacy and ask how quickly they go through stock for big folders? If they move enough of them that would at least hint at a reasonable market.

Also.
I noticed with the new Police that you over-sized the blade to give it a four inch cutting edge. Even if that's as far as you're willing to go, the current Chinook only has 3.375" of cutting edge, if you applied the same principle to the Chinook and gave it a 4" edge, you'd have a 4.375" blade (incidentally, the same length as the new Police) and a significantly larger knife. It wouldn't be the super behemoth that some of us are looking for, but it would be a step in the right direction. It also wouldn't be so overwhelmingly big as to look out of place in the Spyderco lineup.

Maybe? Please:)...

P.S. a large version of the Chinook would be begging for a CPM M-4 blade (or at least a CPM D-2 Sprint run).

A 3V blade and Ti scales would make me open my wallet immediately!!!! From all the snippets of information that trickle down to us the Tuff is shaping up to be a real winner!

Is there a reason it isn't/can't be produced in Golden?
