These are the MAGNUM version of the precision file guides that have we had done just awhile ago. These file guides are really massive compared to the first ones. The size comparisons are:
4" wide vs 3 1/2"
1" deep vs 3/4"
5/8" tall (each) vs 3/8"
1lb 7oz vs 10oz
max width knife size 2.5" vs 2.125"
both include a premium quality Wiha L key for the socket head screws
both are hardened 01 tool steel at 60-61RC hardness

$48.57 Magnum vs $39.57 regular

These boys are big.

Just like the 'regular' version, they have recesses for springs around the threaded screws. (We'll offer them as an option when we locate a decent source.)

Here is a before and after picture. Actually a Magnum and Regular file guide....

glad you asked.
it will hold a wider blade
it's large enough to clamp in your vice
bigger pins=sturdier
larger surface for the file rub against

what's the maximum opening between the 2 jaws ?

ie "thickness" at the choil area

Thanks

Bill

the screws that come with this allow a blade of 1/2" thick and 2 1/2" wide. you can go thicker (!!) with longer screws..

DOH!
should have thought of that...easy though. these are 1/4"-28, very common. The length I supply are 1.25" but any hardware store is going to have this one in longer lengths.

What kind of life could someone expect out of these? Is it something where after you file in the shoulders on a few knives, you have to flatten the file guide on the belt, or will it last a loooong time? I really need one of these, but want it to last. Thanks.

these are 60-61RC hardness. A hand file will lightly scratch the surface but it won't remove any significant material. I suppose after a couple hundred knives, you might have to flatten it a bit but not all that much.
