Biggest disappointment!

"...For me it's the bear grylls knife. I should have known better but friends were swearing by it. Those guys are no longer friends."

Dang dude, because of a different opinion over a knife?

The biggest disappointment for me was after reading all of the great reviews and watching You-tubes showing what a beast of a knife and great value the $20.00 mtech MT 151 Trail Master knockoff was it showed up with a badly warped blade, a guard that rattled and a bevel so canted that to slice straight down on an onion you had to hold the knife at an angle.

What was the reason?

the lock had some issue with it. it was extremely gritty and stiff, but i couldn't find anything that seemed to be an obvious flaw. after all the hype i read, i was very disappointed. i have thought about getting another one to test my luck, but have had really horrible luck with spyderco. that was probably my 10th or so spyderco and my last.

on the positive, i've been so lucky with kershaw that I just stick to ordering them. even the blemish models i have bought have been absolutely perfect. luck of the draw, i guess.

Don't get me wrong, it's a very high quality knife with top shelf fit and finish.

However, that wasn't enough for me to overcome it's flaws and I ended up selling it after a month or so.

I love my Zaan. It's either that or a Sebbie every day.

Fallkniven F1 for me.

Loved the size and blade shape but handle never felt right to me. Was very uncomfortable in the web of my hand during heavy cutting. Maybe I will sell it or re-handle it.. who knows

Paramilitary 2

I bought into the hype train because everyone on virtually every forum loves the thing - but it just never clicked with me. I felt the handle was far too long, the locking mechanism was clumsy, and the clip rode too high in pocket. When using the finger choil, I felt the handle went from long to excessively long. The S30V and G10 materials are A+ but the overall package just left me disappointed.

Brous Bionic

I knew it was small but when I got it, it felt like a toy. Didn't care for the aluminum scales, even with the texturing they were slick. Would not flip until I took it apart and cleaned it up. Flipped like a dream after that but I sold it. I didn't care for the design. And for what you get it should be $50 cheaper.

No doubt, Swamp Rat Ratmandu. I have read so many positive things about the RMD. I finally bought one. Opened the box, picked up the knife and it was way to small for my hands. I was so disappointed. I wanted to great things to say about the knife also.......catch and release. It sold fast.

Kershaw Cryo. It had a slight recurve from the factory, just enough to make it a little frustrating to sharpen. The blade was wayyy too thick behind the edge, and at one point the bevel didn't even go all the way to the apex.

Do you still have it? I reprofiled mine on a course stone to mmake the edge more acute. World of difference. Gave it to my brother in law for his through hike through the vt part of the Appalachian trail.

Rat 1 .
Bought it because I wanted to upgrade my opinel 10 . Heard and read a lot of great things about .
Got it , its handle isnt made for using for any much length of time or for using realy hard , definitely not both .. it leaves huge blisters or did for me anyway ..
The blade wont old its edge for long .
I am just spoiled by the handle of the opinel for using a knife for any duration , and the edge holding thru whittling , thru skinning and parting out . It may be old but for the price , its got a lot going for it .
I love the look of the RAT1 , I love the way the blade flicks out with a no bullshiz action , it just doesnt perform like I need it to , and I wasnt going to carry a knife only cos it looks good . Gave it to one of the kids who came thru my care . He loves it .

Literally everything I've held or used by Benchmade was a dud. Blade play, bad ergos, bad blade profile, bad assisted openers. I don't understand the fandom for that company except that they use decent steel in a moderately priced knife. Anyway, the XM18 was a bigger disappointment, not because of the quality of the knife, per se, but the quality of the company representative. Especially when Hinderer himself seems like a great guy but then continues to employ a complete a**hole without putting him in check. When guys email the company with stars in their eyes, you don't slap them in the back of the head and completely dismiss their concerns over a functionality issue of a relatively high dollar knife, especially when the stated reason for making that knife is to be used hard by first responders and the military.

On the other hand, everything I've held or used by Kai either matched or beat the quality to price point of the knife ratio and the customer service dept has bent over backwards to try to fix quirks or small issues that arise the production knife world.

In my collection, my 100+ dollar knives are all Spyderco, Benchmade and ALMar. I have several 100+ dollar knives and I always have buyers remorse when I get them, guess I'm just a cheap bastage. I know they will just sit in the box and occasionally get rubbed with a diaper and flicked open once in while. Fricken' knives are sooo hard to say "no" to sometimes...have yet to pull the trigger on a $200 dollar knife...

My biggest disappointment was my own fault...thought I would get into Bali's and bought two, A lovely BM51 and a Bradley Kimura V....both excellent quality. One time, I wasn't paying attention, and nonchalantly grabbed the sharp handle of the Kimura, swirled it around and damn near cut off my index finger, mid knuckle - I mean ALL THE WAY TO THE DAMN BONE. Needless to say, I never got past my first two beginner moves that I learned on youtube. LOL Maybe another day.

As far as F & F...I've purchased a few cheap Gerbers that I have been less than happy with...I no longer purchase that brand.

I may or may not get some flack for this but my most disappointing knives I have ever purchased were a Sebenza (multiple iterations) and Paramilitary 2 (two different iterations). These 2 knives seem to be the all-stars of bladeforums and because of this I have purchased 4 differnt Sebenzas and 5 different Paramilitary 2's. Each time I would get them and use each one I just did not get the hype. While each are great knives in their own respects, they just were not for me.

As far as the Sebenza each one I owned would chip after moderate use. Which I found odd as I was always led to believe that CRK runs their S30V softer. Also the blade profile just did not appeal to me. No doubt they are beautifully built knives but just not for me. Also the last Sebenza I had (the 25) I sold becuase the double finger choils really hindered my preferred grip on the knife.

As far as the Paramilitary 2 (while my favorite all around steel is Spyderco's S30v) the blade to handle ratio felt very odd to me. I also ended up bending two different tips off of the Paramilitary 2 as it was a little to thin for me (which is odd as I was even more rough with my Military and the tip was fine). Also and I know this is not really the truth to it, but the Paramilitary 2 feels very very fragile to me when I use it (which again I know is far beyond the truth).

I was disappointed in the para for literally the opposite reason. Everyone talks about how ergonomic it is, but my hand just felt pinched in between the two arcs/finger guards.

I also was not keen on the lock.

My biggest disappointment was on a $40 Boker Plus folder that I bought at a gun show. It was damned near impossible to open, and when I finally had it opening somewhat reliably if not smoothly, the blade then scraped against the liner. Trying to adjust it further, I stripped the lone torx screw beyond repair, leaving it at a point where the liner lock wouldn't even fully engage. Turns out that it was a counterfeit anyway. Lesson learned - be sure of what you're buying.

Now that I think of it, the only "real" Boker I own - a Badger Gemini - was a bit underwhelming. I like the look and feel, but it just seems fragile compared to my dirt cheap Kershaw and CRKT folders. Not sure if I'll ever find a use for it. Maybe for fishing trips.

I reprofiled mine too, it just took removing about half a pound of steel to get there :o

I have tried twice to like a Sebenza, Regular and Classic. Just didn't do it for me, but it did get it out of my system.

Looks like you did a fantastic job, I'm sure it can push cut news print no problem.

Thanks for the compliment, it was my first attempt at taking an edge to that level of refinement. I'm still not a fan of the blade, but it will push cut gentle S-curves in news print :)

Easy.

Benchmade Griptillian.

Horrible hand feel.

So so steel.

Priced way out of it's league.

Had two - sold them both and moved on.

Custom Wilkins leafstorm. Great fit and finish, looks good, but it has a huge protruding pivot with a lock screw. Utterly impossible to clip into a pocket. All of my knives are users, so this disappointed me tremendously.
