Biggest Knife pet peeve's?

I thought VG10 was regarded as a high quality steel?

To many including me it is. And I still feel 440C when done right can perform extremely well. Times are really crazy now that Im seeing S30V being lumped into undesirable materials. Heck it was 10 short years ago it was a super steel. All I know is that I have been collecting knives for the better part of 20 years. And if you handed me 5 identical knives except each one had a different steel and had me use them for a week I would be hard pressed to be able to tell you which steel was superior besides edge retention and I would be even more hard pressed to tell you what type of steel I thought each knife was even if you handed me a list of those used on those knives. To be honest, aside from some very talented makers and the occasional serious collector, I doubt most members hear could either.

FRN. It works fine but feels so cheap and hollow. I'm almost embarrassed if I'm carrying an Endura and someone askes to use my knife.

Lock backs. Cut myself pretty bad with a very cheap chinesse one when the lock failed as a kid so now I unfairly dislike them all. I'm racist against them because of that one I didn't like.

Price. Easily 1/3 of the knives on the market these days cost too much for what they are and the materials they are made of. I'm talking production stuff, it's hard to say about customs with the price of the maker's time involved. *cough* Emerson *cough*

Coating that inhibits cutting. Whatever they put on Izulas is a great example. Sure it won't rust after a month in the jungle but sometimes it drags on whatever I'm cutting. This one is probably more a personal "choose the right tool for the job" thing though after typing it out but I'll leave it.

Knife guys that aren't "on our level." I have a good friend that goes out of his way to show me his new Fury knives even after I've given him several decent knives and point him towards this very forum. You know the type: use it as a screwdriver, whacks things with the handle like a hammer and loses multiple knives per year. Usually seen as an early stage in the maturity cycle of a "knife guy" but some never leave that stage, like the 40 year old high school quarterback that still talks about "his playing days."

Thumb studs too high on the blade that get in the way when sharpening, blade play, too much stock for a sharp edge, tip down carry, and liner locks. I prefer Tri-Ad (most cold steel folders) or Spyderco's frame locks (Tenacious) or their rocker locks (Delica 4 FFG).

I am not a fan of tip down only knives, partial serrations or knives that come dull from the factory.

This is my grandfather, sadly. Loves his Furies and Schrades and even his no name knives. He has some vintage two bladed Case folding hunters, that's about the best he has.

Just keep him away from united cutlery fantasy knives and there may still be hope for him. I do agree though that it is particularly annoying that just because im known as the "knife guy" in the family everyone tries to impress me with their pocket knives. Some of them telling me that they will let me in on the secret of where they scored such a high end knife for so cheap so that they will save me from all lost money they heard I was not needing to blow on my rip off knives. Oh yes all wise non knife guy, school me and drop your knowledge. Im all ears. Much like the lady at wal-mart the other day who argued with me for 30 minutes saying that they did not reduce their knife inventory when a month ago they had a 7' x 5' case filled with knives including some newer camillus cudas, sog tomahawks and now they have a 2' x 3' display case with about 1/3 that inventory missing the above mentioned knives and many others. Finally I had to tell her that I dont care if she is the owner of wal-mart I know my knives and I know what was there and isnt there now. She still professed I was wrong and simply mistaken. When I asked what happened to the inventory that was in the clamshell packages before she asked "what is a clam shell package". Oh yeah lady, you sure are the expert.

I hate swap meet knife guys. We have all seen them and they want $150.00 for a cold steel recon. $50.00 for a knock off folder with an edge like a nickel. But always someone will buy it, I just want to shake em!

My biggest pet peave is when someone puts a secondary bevel on a scandi grind! No longer a scandi once secondary bevel is put on it...

I don't really have any pet peeves when it comes to knives, I won't buy anything I don't like or won't use so I have no complaints...

When someone else flicks my knife (knives) open. I myself am not a flicker and it erks my liver when someone else flicks my knife.

Blade play.

I habitually strop my knives if I used them during the day. Even a little bit

Thank you Mora bushcraft black! I almost bought that knife till I found out about that secondary bevel. Completely turned me off

Alot of my peeves have been stated by others, so this is really the only one I got:

-Teflon coatings (I'm looking at you Cold Steel!!!)

It isn't that durable, it looks awful as it wears, and it flakes off. I'd rather not pick bits of Teflon out of my food if I open a can or abrasive packaging.

That too. Especially when they do it forcefully. Or if someone is using my knife and they drive the edge into concrete or a bit of metal like its nothing. When anyone asks to use one of my knives these days, I make them tell me what they want to use it for beforehand, and if I think they run the risk of damaging my knife I tell them that I will do it or they can find someone else's knife to trash.
